What's your favourite, cheapest home-made meal?

In these economically tight times.... Mine is 1/2 tin of Tesco Stockwell beans [28p a tin] + 1 slice of Tesco white toastie [0.75p loaf] = 14p + 5p = 19p.

Sometimes I push the boat out and eat 2 slices Joy.

  • I love porridge in the morning - I even like it just made with water if I have no milk, and then a little runny honey to sweeten it. I also love pasta and pesto - with onion and garlic and some cheese - and whatever vegetables I have available. A simple and cheap desert I like is a banana baked in the oven with a little honey and cinnamon, or a little bit of chocolate put on before you bake it - it only takes 15 mins in the oven but it’s so lovely.
Like you I love beans on toast (with a little grated cheese on top) but I realised some years ago that tomato triggers my arthritis- so I can’t eat tomato(or potato) any more - I really miss them. I used to love having a thinly sliced tomato on hot buttered toast - so fresh and delicious. Also a jacket potato with butter and cheese. But I can’t have these things anymore. Thankfully there are many good alternatives:)

  • Ooh nice..the banana thing sounds good..I might try it.would you wrap it in foil as if you were cooking it on a BBQ?

  • I think you can do that too -  but I just slice them in half lengthways and put them on a baking tray (to make washing up the baking tray easier I put them on a piece of baking paper on the tray). Bananas are super healthy apparently - so it’s an unusually healthy desert (I think anyway!).
