Generations speaking different languages

I don't understand most text speak and emoji's are a totally different language to me, I'm wondering if in a few years time the older and younger generations will be speaking such different languages that they won't actually be able to communicate at all?

I find text speak in email, posts and every day conversations maddening as I have to spend so long working out what people are actually trying to say, as someone who's dyslexic it's really difficult and having spent so long learning to overcome my dyslexia  it feels like a slap in the face that people are so lazy with their language.

How do others feel, it's probably only me who feels like this, but it sort of feels like a double discrimination as some of the worst people for doing it are other ND's

  • The only times I tend to use this Gen Z talk is when I say lol (laugh out loud), tbh (to be honest) and irl (in real life). When it comes to emojis I tend to write what I’m writing and then use emojis afterwards. Only time I use emojis only is when I’m in distress and I send my mum crying emjois, or if I haven’t got time to respond I’ll send a quick thank you emoji

I don’t know what half the Gen Z’s talk about though so I feel so embarrassed and ashamed to be in their age group (especially the older ones)! Even I don’t understand what the F they go on about and don’t get me started on tiktok. How is watching someone blinking meant to be fun or entertaining?! I get bullied by Gen Z’s for not being like them and then I get bullied by other generations for being an F ing Gen Z! I can’t win! Sorry for my rant!

  • No, it's OK you rant away.

I'm still a little fuzzy on what all these Gens are, I think gen z is the under 30's? I've never been on tiktok, but I can't imagine wanting to watch others blink, unless I was wondering if they were a psychopath or not? Psychopaths have a low blink rate apparently?

  • As far as I’m concerned, alls these genz are just random labels for people depending on what year you were born in. I think the Gen Z boundaries start from 1997 so yeah they will still be under 30 but not far off. I think Gen Z stops at 2010 but I’m not too sure on that one. I think the baby boomers were just after the war? When I have googled all the boundaries seem to change. We might have different labels next year the way they change them. Don’t even know who came up with these labels. Either way I was defo born at the wrong time as I just don’t get what my age group are into.

I won’t at all be surprised if those tiktokkers are psychopaths, they all seem to be bullies and liars from what I can gather. Apparently when my mum was on holiday in turkey with her sister and daughter, the daughter said about some supposedly oh so famous tiktokker was staying in their five star hotel and flew a private jet there and back but it turns out she only visited that hotel for a few hours but stayed in some cheap b and b and took the easy jet flights there and back as she was on both flights with my mum etc. I’ve never heard of her or watched any tiktoks. In fact when I was watching season 4 of clarksons farm, I had to fast forward that female farmer and all of Jeremy’s pub staff because the girl farmer was more interested in doing stupid faces and putter her overalls on and off in front of the camera (and was tarted up the ying yang in make up) and the pub staff were that miserable without having their social media or phones with them, Jeremy even said to stop being miserable Gen Z people! I’m sorry for my rant but I feel I’m the only Gen Z girl who actually seems to say and think this. Hope you guys don’t think I’m miserable

  • Can’t agree with you more there! I mean Yoshi and Kirby are healers in my opinion! Seeing their little faces just makes me feel better, until the gaslighting

  • I strongly believe in the healing power of Nintendo games!

  • Both my parents are Gen X but they are at the beginning of that generation. Ugh when I was 16 everything was a nightmare. I was asked to leave school, my mum was gaslighted into not loving me and I had nothing else to do. That’s when I rediscovered my Nintendo games and I got back into playing them again.

  • I think it's because I'm at the older end. My husband a few years older is classed as the previous generation. I was 16 for the millennium, not a kid or an adult, that awkward age when you're simultaneously too old and too young. And with no inclination to do anything except stay home and teach myself to write in fluent elvish. (Honestly, so many signs...)

  • Ahh if you say so! I would still love to know why they have come up with the labels and in my opinion random time stamps lol!

  • Ahh I see that makes sense, but wouldn’t everyone before the millennials be classed as millennials as they were also there to witness the turn of the millennium? I mean I was born at the time but I wasn’t even a month old lol so I can’t remember. I’m glad you like being millennial though, say I hate being Gen Z, it’s so embarrassing as all they seem to be portrayed as are these people who just want to do random stuff on tiktok, or unboxing videos. I wonder how many views I’d get if I posted myself failing a mission on hit and run? Plus you never see a happy Gen Z er. I mean one time when I was waiting in the drs I was chatting to an older man and he said I’m the only young one who is actually nice and decent to chat too and doesn’t go round saying old geezer or whatever.

  • I can say that these labels are probably the most pointless of them all. I mean what’s the point in it? When it came to generations I thought it would be those born in 80s 90s etc but these labels and their stamps just seem so random. A lot of people seem to think Gen Z are the millennials, either way I hate being in my generation, I’m so embarrassed because of how miserable and reliant on social media they have to be.

  • I’d love to know who came up with this in the first place.

My AI gave me the following response:

Generational ranges are not defined by a single authority; instead, they are established through consensus among researchers, demographers, and cultural commentators.

So nobody if the official owner of the definitions but they are a social invention.

  • Yes, I actually thought that was what they meant at first, till I discovered it referred to my 'generation'. The lines are so arbitrary and don't really make sense. I think that's why it bothers me so much as it doesn't feel logical?

  • I like being a Millennial. It’s pretty okay overall. We get the name I think from the fact that we’re just old enough to vividly remember the time around the millennium. What makes us unique is we remember both growing up with no internet AND also growing up with cell phones. We remember both before and after September 11th 2001 vividly as children or young adults.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m not saying that Millennials are the best, but we do have an interesting perspective just like all of the other age groups.

  • Oh wow a new generation now?! I wonder if the next generation in however many years will be like Gen gamma or something.

Gen Alpha seems to be those born 2013-24 but some some seem to say that alpha starts at 2010 or even 2007, in other words they don’t really know. I’d love to know who came up with this in the first place.

  • See I assumed those born on like 1 Jan 2000 would be classed as millennials, even I suppose I thought I was near enough but hey ho. Yeah it makes no sense to have these random labels, it’s like someone has been bored and just thought of random names for things. I must admit I’ve been given a hard time from a lot of millennials when growing up so it nice to speak to you who seems to be very kind and understanding.

  • I think Gen Z stops at 2010 but I’m not too sure on that one.

Here are the formal definitions with birth date in brackets:

    Silent Generation (1928 - 1945)
    Baby Boomers (1946 - 1964)
    Gen X (1965 - 1980)
    Millennials (1981 - 1996)
    Gen Z (1997 - 2012)
    Gen Alpha (2011 - 2024)
    Gen Beta (starting 2025)

I hadn't realised a new generation is spawning now - you learn something new every day.

  • I think you sound most sensible! I hate the label of millennial I'm supposed to be in. I can't relate to it at all, and hate the term as it means nothing to me and get iterated when I hear it.  Why have such meaningless labels!
