Advent begins!

It’s that time of year again! Advent has begun! Christmas is coming, the decorations and lights are all thinking away and everything has gone all cozy!

Anyone else excited for Christmas? What’s on your Christmas list? How will you spend Christmas?

For me I get a little mini Christmas as my birthday is during advent so when I get my presents I put them under the tree as well.

  • I’m afraid I’m going zap the joy on this thread because I’m dreading Christmas.

All the hype, lights, noise and shopping madness crashes down on Christmas Day. Afterwards, shops look sad and tired. SALE goods are bundled in all sorts of odd places and everyday shopping is a nightmare because the shelves are devoid of necessary products, at least they are where I live.

I will be spending Christmas on my own with my two dogs. A nice walk in the morning, followed by a quiet time reading or researching some of my interests will OK. I might watch some TV later, but I will avoid watching anything that is likely to mention ‘the best Christmas ever!’ or ‘ Christmas is for families’. A glass or two of sparkling wine, and a good drama will be as good as it gets.

  • Aww if it helps I’m also spending Christmas alone! Tbh I actually enjoy it in my flat more than when I was at home with my parents as my nan is normally always around as well as she is so needy so I never mix with anyone, plus I get such overwhelming anxiety! Also got bullied by neighbours so that didn’t help! What I’m saying is I practically always spent my Christmas alone but in an awful environment so now I’m away I can do what I want when I want.

I get what you mean about the shops, the sales are great but you’re lucky to get anything.

Im still undecided if I should take my decs down before new year or on like the 6 Jan or whatever.

  • I can completely relate to all you have said there! A nice quiet Christmas is all I need and want! I enjoy having my cranberry juice and cereal whist opening my presents and then a regular lunch and tea. I also can’t wait to see what presents I get!

Yes, it does help Elfilis and I think some others will be doing the same.

It’s a long time since I spent Christmas with family and relationships with them had always been problematic. I’m on my own now, although until a few years ago I used to spend Christmas with a close relative who is still living and their family. Relationships were strained, and their behaviour made it obvious I was their there only because ‘it was the right thing to do’.  I couldn’t wait to escape back to my house.

I remember one year, when I was still living at home with my parents, escaping from the celebrations by driving off in my car to beside a lake and coming close to a meltdown. Someone knocked the window of my car to ask if I was OK.

Christmas makes me mourn for the things I never had—a non abusive father, good relationships with sibling/s and a joyous Christmas without it being overwhelming. I have no doubt this is because of the ‘wonderful Christmas’ narrative the media spews out, and when you are a child you take it to heart, though I never enjoyed the noise and party vibes elements at Christmas. The good thing about being on your own is that all that nonsense is avoided and I can have a truly peaceful Christmas.
