Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving in USA is coming up in a few days, so we’re all prepping for the big day. For us Autistic Americans, this probably means gearing up for uncomfortable social gatherings with family you barely ever see. On top of that, some of us have more than one get together we are obligated to go to due to blended families and such.

I have to travel about 3ish hours on Thursday and Friday to see my family, then we’re seeing my wife’s family Sunday. That’s not including a big Thanksgiving party we’re having at my work tomorrow as well.

Just keep us Americans that have social anxiety or are the black sheep in mind this week. I imagine there’s a lot of masking around this season.

For those of y’all in the UK, how would you feel about having a holiday like Thanksgiving?

  • Far too close to Christmas to be acceptable for me. The old Celtic festivals would break up the year nicely, plus jumping over fires etc. might be fun -  Samhain (October 31), Imbolc (February 1), Beltaine (May 1), and Lughnasa (August 1)

    I agree with you there Martin, about the Celtic festivals.

    Do Americans make such a big deal of xmas? I know you don't do Boxing Day and am I right that you only have xmas day off? I'm looking forward to xmas this year as I will have a table full of family for the first time in a while and thats what I like, loads of people to cook for!

    Other years we don't go visiting, but I don't think I'd like it that much, to overwhelming. New Year too, I'm fed up with it all and desperate to get back to normal by then.

    We do make a big deal of Christmas as well! For some jobs we get the 24th and 25th off, but some only do the 25th. I totally agree with  and  that Thanksgiving is far too close to Christmas. That’s two big family-centered holidays too close together.

    I have a problem cooking roast dinners because of this! I just panic and don't enjoy it. This year I'm going to pre cook and freeze individual items, then use the hot air fryer to re-heat. It's a cop out but otherwise I can't enjoy it.

    Is it? Why? I love to cook, cooking for 6 or 7 is easy, even cooking for 20 isn't that hard, especially something like a roast, it's all down to timing. I know some people who totally freak out at the idea of cooking for more than 4 as they can't work out portions and how much to do, I tell them they know how many potatoes etc they'd do for 4, so just double or treble it
