If not gloves?

If it is a sensory problem largely confined to the finger tips (where sensory receptors are concentrated) then fingerless gloves might work..

Seems to be the sides of my fingers, and in-between them. I've never managed to wear a ring (including my wedding ring which I had to put on a chain around my neck). I tried mittens but my thumb is the same!

I have the same problem with rings. A few months ago I tried out a very thin wedding ring - 1.5mm in width - and I managed to tolerate it. Because it is light I could get away with a larger diameter than normal, less momentum so less chance of it coming off. I think the lack of tightness did the trick.

I was aware of the ring for a couple of days, but could tolerate it. Following this the ring became unnoticeable, except when it hits on hard objects, when I get reminded of its presence.

Interesting. Is it a tolerate but can still not forget it's there, or is it something you got used to and don't have to think about? I can manage very loose things around my wrists but I can't ignore them. I use this as an advantage though and have a series of bracelets to remind me of things I need to not forget!
