What do I want for xmas?

New knees, but nobody seems to be able to get me those. I never know what I want for xmas and birthdays, it always feels like a yawning gap that I might fall into.

The only things I've asked for are the usual stuff like body lotion and handcream, but I can't think of anythng else, or not that anyone is going to actually buy me.

Suggestions welcome, but what about you lot, what do you want and do you think you have any chance of getting it?

  • Hi, I find gifts you actually are going to use quite nice- my mum’s partner once even got her an automatic vacuum cleaner - it might not be what comes to mind when you think of a gift but I think it was great as it is really useful but not something my mum would have treated herself to. This was quite a large gift though. But maybe you can think of some cooking / kitchen gadgets or utensils? Maybe a sandwich maker/grill or a waffle machine or a new pan or even an airfryer if it’s a big gift? I have one friend who cooks quite a lot so I sometimes get him a cookbook possibly with some of the special spices needed for it. My mum loves boardgames and puzzles so those are always great gifts. I like think fun logic games. In the past my mum also got me books but now we usually prefer to pick our own. I did get my mum a hiking guide though a while ago as she likes walking. A mug is nice too because it is used a lot. Or if you like tea you could ask for a nice set of teas (personally I am too fussy about which ones I like so that wouldn’t be ideal for me). Other people like my stepfather is basically too busy for most things, doesn’t cook and getting him something related to his interests is hard because he has so much already (plus he is a hoarder so I don’t want to add more unneeded items to his collection)- he does like good chocolate or biscuits or sweet treats though so I often just get him something like that- I just have to make sure they don’t look too pretty otherwise he will also end up hoarding them rather than eating them. I really love picking gifts for people. If you really don’t know what to ask for people could always give you a gift voucher on amazon maybe… that’s always going to come in useful. Not sure if any of these things have given you some ideas? I would try to think about what you like to do, eat, cook, etc. Then see if there are any items you actually need or if there is something that you probably wouldn’t treat yourself to but might give you a lot of joy. Or you can get other people to surprise you!! In my family we very rarely ask for gifts but we try to come up with ideas for each other

  • I've run out of space for big kitchen stuff like air fryers and sandwich toasters are always so tiny, I think I'd barely get half a slice of our bread in one. I'm having to follow a strict one in, one out policy for kitchen stuff and I'm not a gadgety person, I've been trying to pare back my kitchen stuff to things I actually use.

  • makes sense- I am also a creature of habit in the kitchen- until i switch to the newest thing- I did used to think though that a rice cooker was the best thing ever- until I discovered microwave rice- as you can tell minimal effort is my thing. I know some people really love kitchen gadgets though - my mum does actually make use of things like the waffle maker etc.

  • I use most gadgets in the kitchen. I'm on my fourth air fryer. They don't last long.  I love my microwave,  I boil in water i fry with oil in a frying pan.

All gadgets have their place.  I boil rice in water, microwaved rice is overpriced and horrid.

  • I only use the microwave for defrosting things and warming plates, I never actually cook anything in it, I'm not sure how I'd go about even doing something simple like heating up baked beans or frozen peas. I can boil rice really well, much to the amazement of my Indian DiL. The airryer is the exclusive preserve of the friend I live with, all his meat products go in it and keeps it away from my veggie stuff, I totally went of the idea of an airfryer when I found that the sort of things I'd want to cook in one, like pakora's can't be done in one.

I'm not a fan of waffles, or omelets or anything else that you can get a gadget for.

My favourite gadget if it can be called that, is a potato ricer, mashed potato is easy with one and before anyone say's it, I don't like chips either, or jacket potatoes, esepcially when the skins crispy. I'm not a fan of anything much thats crispy except toast, flacid and badly done toast is an offence against decency!

I actually like the process of cooking, the chopping and mixing, when making pastry I only mix the fat and flour together in the food processor as it keeps it cold, but I still bring it together by hand, with a flat bladed knife, adding water as I go.

  • Yes, esp. if you microwave baked potatoes then put them in the air fryer. Yum!

  • It is crazy how many things you can make in the microwave- my mum is still antimicrowave and I grew up without one but I am a fan- works brilliantly for quick baked potatoes or pumpkin.

  • Ooh that does sound cool! I can’t eat popcorn unfortunately so not one for me but sounds nice. I am probably letting my mum surprise me with gifts this year but I am abroad so it is rather complicated so I told her not to put in too much effort and we might just pick some useful things together like a new frying pan- it’s crazy but compared to the Uk the frying pans and pots here are of abysmal quality… i always bought cheap ones in the UK but they were so much better- the ones here change shape and the coating comes off - sorry I am getting distracted but useful gifts are nice :)
