I was recently at a ComicCon with some great representation of neurodiverse creatives including a panel of content creators featuring:
- Vlogger Connor Ward
- YouTuber Kevin Chapman
- Sheepdog (of Sheepdog Says and The Autistic Creative Hub Podcast)
- and Bex Ollerton, a.k.a. Schnumn, who is an illustrator and comic artist making work around anxiety, mental health and neurodiversity.
Bex Ollerton has compiled a lovely comic book anthology called Sensory: Life on the Spectrum which features work by autistic creators which is worth checking out.
My only gripe about the panel was the fact that the organisers thought it would be a good idea to stick it in one of the big halls with other panels and merchandise stalls - surrounded by distraction! The Writers Block panels were in a lovely quiet space, where I hung out a lot. I’d suggested in feedback that discussion with neurodiverse panelists and audiences would be better in spaces with less noise, overwhelm and distraction. My emotional support elastic band was working overtime.
And for any gamers reading, I managed to catch Troy Baker (TLOU) performing songs inspired by Joel Miller. He was awesome. I often find music events overwhelming in all sorts of ways which is annoying because I love my music, but his performance was absolute perfection for my AuDHD brain! If you get the chance to catch him performing, I recommend going to see him.
