At the weekend I had been listening to a light-hearted discussion on the radio about vehicle bumper stickers featuring messages like, "Honk if you like pizza!"
One of the presenters had asked, "If someone honks their horn aggressively, how can you be sure if it's because they really, really like pizza? Or, if it's because another motorist has done something to anger them?
The presenter then put forward the scenario of striking workers with placards bearing messages like, "Honk to support the [insert profession of choice]"
They asked, "If someone honks aggressively, are they doing it because they support the [insert profession of choice] and are expressing their anger at the thing the workers are striking about? Are they doing it because they have an immense dislike of [insert profession of choice]? Or, is it because another motorist has done something to anger them?"
Although I found the discussion highly amusing and entertaining, I can honestly say the things being discussed were not things that I had ever previously stopped to ponder.
