What have you been up too today?

I've had a fairly busy but good day, a quick dash to the shops, followed by a nice walk with my dog, Fearn, then gardening, I've weeded half of one of the fruit patches, over the next few days I will finish weeding and them fork in some well rotted horse poo and cover it with bark chippings.

Then I will start on the decorative beds and weed all those out and get rid of some pretty but thuggish invaders and add some more plants that I actually want.

The other thing I'm doing is making crab apple jelly, we've had a monster crop this year, I've only picked about a third of them and that was a big pan full, I think anyone who cmes to the hosue will end up leaving with a pot of the stuff.

I will have to make some more chutney from all the unripe and semi ripe tomatoes I took out yesterday, I will put some over wintering onions in their place.

  • Ahh brilliant thank you for that! I will have to have a good look into this one day but I will save the link. I’d probably just get this up on my laptop or iPad more than anything!

  • If you are keen on cooking then a good book - with instructions from boiling an egg to very complicated cookery is A Guide To Modern Cookery by Escoffier (there is even a section on fruit-stews and jams).

I found this link to it online: https://dn790001.ca.archive.org/0/items/cu31924000610117/cu31924000610117.pdf

If you want a paper copy I expect an original book would be expensive, but you can get reprints.

  • Omg wow that sounds so amazing! I hope you enjoy having your crab apple jelly and it must be so rewarding to have something you made yourself! I haven’t baked (excluding daily meals) in years! Now I have my kitchen up and running though I might actually start making some chocolate crispy cakes and muffins again.

  • Today I got the weekly shopping sorted and managed to get my code to automatically decipher text produced using the autokey cipher to work.

One problem I had was that there are two versions of the cipher and some of the websites that you can use to produce cipher text produce garbage.

Whilst trying to work out why my code wasn't working I manually decoded some of the cipher text and found it turned to garbage after 26 letters - I did manage to find another website that worked (using the other version of the cipher) and managed to prove that my code is working.

I'm not sure if the cipher challenge will use the autokey cipher for one of the later challenges, but if not it was something interesting to have a go at.

As I think it would be interesting to learn about modern ciphers I'll read a bit more about number theory as something to do when I'm not well enough to do something towards getting my van repaired.

  • I made my first batch of crab apple jelly today, it's beautiful, like a row of red jewels in jars, I went and picked more crab apples today and will make more over the next few days.

It's so satisfying to have rows of jewel like preserves in the cupboard, even if some like pickled eggs are rather strange looking gems!

  • Ahh I’ve been terrible with my sleep lately so I ended up having a super long lie in today. Watched some YouTube videos of Simpsons hit and run. Also used my airwrap and hair products which have been nice to use and my hair smells nice now. Also been playing ACNH and going onto galaxy2 again now.

  • Finding motivation pretty hard to find at the moment. I walked the dogs, did some laundry and hung it on the line. Since the sun was shining so I forced myself outside to do some late season garden tidying. Started watching the Ed Gein programme on netflix, its very strange.

I also rented a cottage for a week away for my wife's birthday which is in a couple of weeks.

I'm struggling to shift my own personal cloud at the moment, so everything is just a struggle.

  • Managing a cold so I’ve had for the most part, a quiet day at home. I’ve begun applying for PIP. I finally got a formal diagnosis on Wednesday (privately, expensive but if it gets me the help I need then it’s worth it).
