Many people find polytheism strange, I don't, I find it refreshing, what I don't understand is why so many people gave it up for montheism?

I'm reading the book Small Gods by Terry Pratchett at the moment that seems particularly pertinent here.
There is a part which talks about if Gods only came to exist (in our belief) because we found there was a need to abdicate the responsibility for all the pain of existence to a greater force, that it is all in the service of the "greater good" and it we are really hoping all the pain and misery of existence will be rewarded "in the next life".
Religion comes in for some serious critique but with a lot of laughs along the way.
Of course he does it in a humerous way but there is a lot of good theological material for consideration and a lot of it is held up to analysis and found to be very thin on value.
Well worth a ready if you can get a copy.

I know lots of people like Terry Pratchett but I don’t normally enjoy the few books of his I’ve tried. However, I did read the beginning of this one and thought it rather amusing, so I have borrowed the audiobook from the library to give it a go.
