I just thought about sharing this, after reading TheCatWoman's post about having a Mammogram. For quite a while I wanted to have a colonoscopy, but it's not possible unless you have blood in your poo. But if you are 50+ you can get a test kit for bowel screening.

Well, I am 31 but I may call them to ask whether it is possible to have a bowel screening, since I've had some issues with my intestines. The link above is for England, I am reading for Scotland here.

I contacted them, if you are younger, you can ask them to your GP (they may issue it or not, but it is possible.)

Maybe others have comments, or other screenings they consider important.

  • I do agree. In these days of pressurised health services, it is important to take control of our own health by being aware of our body and noticing, where possible, changes or anything unusual. 

    My GP organised an additional bowel cancer screening test that was ‘more sensitive to the presence of blood’ than the standard one automatically sent to adults over whatever the age is. It involved the same process as the standard test, but it was returned to my GP surgery for forwarding to the lab. 

  • Your GP shold be able to order bowel cancer screening test kit for you, it seems to be the first thing they do if you have gastro-intestinal problems, probably because it's so cheap and easy, then they can take things from there. I wouldn't of thought a colonoscopy would be the first choice of treatment, even though it's a couple of hours in hospital, it's still uncomfortable and invasive.

    I would always recomend seeing your GP for any health worries.

    It's annoying when you don't like in England to find that all the readily available advice from the government is England only, even when they call it ****uk. I found this with Age UK, they're not UK wide they're England wide and it's only at the bottom of the screens that you find out they have different organisations for the devolved nations and for parts of the devolved nations.
