I think there were a few small trials (30–40 children) in India where it was reported to reduce Autism symptoms. That was evidence enough for Trump.

Some research has shown that folinic acid can help with Cerebral folate deficiency (which presents autism-like symptoms), so how many of those who have been successfully treated with folinic acid actually had autism (and weren't misdiagnosed) is questionable, especially since the numbers of individuals involved in the studies are rather small.
