Trump on autism

The Guardian is reporting that Trump has just teased that he will be making an important announcement on autism tomorrow (quite how this was relevant in the middle of a eulogy for Charlie Kirk is not clear but that’s the Great Orange Blimp for you). Looks like we can expect mums taking paracetamol during pregnancy to be blamed and folinic acid to be touted as a cure.

  • Trump can say what he likes, it dosen't make it true.

I think this linking of paracetamol and autism  needs unpacking, I don't think there's any evidence that paracetamol causes autism, or that taking it pregnancy does. I think this is another attack on women, if you have an autistic child it's your fault, you took medicines you were told were safe. I think it goes along with the idea that you cant have a genuine miscarriage, even after a few months, you must of tried for an illegal abortion and need punishing.

What is the problem with autism per se? It would seem that many of the "tech bros" are autistic, Elon Musk and Bill Gates to name but two, like them or loathe them, they've made world changing advances in technology without which Trump and his ilk wouldn't be able to flourish in the way they do.

Of course Trump made these announcements at a funeral, everythings got to be about him.

  • Trump can say what he likes, it dosen't make it true

I'll think you'll find that when he says what he likes, it does make it true—at least for a large section of the population.

You're right about this being another attack on women. It'll be the "refrigerator mother" thing all over again. (How come there were never any "refrigerator fathers"?)

  • He can shout all he likes, he can ban as many people as he likes, he can imprison as any people as he likes, but he and his most fervent supporters will be the only ones who think it's true, the rest of us will just be happy heretics. As someone on the news said earlier pain and fever during pregnancy can produce a far worse outcome than taking paracetamol.

I wouldn't like to be a pregnant woman in America right now, I wonder how long it will be before you have to go to some sort of hospital where you can be "looked after" to make sure you don't do anything that might harm your baby?

  • As well as choosing the ‘right hospital’, I imagine women will be bringing their own supply of paracetamol just to make sure they don’t go without.

Painkiller options are limited already for pregnant women without Trump’s proclamations that are based on political ideology rather than medical evidence and clinical need.
