Trump on autism

The Guardian is reporting that Trump has just teased that he will be making an important announcement on autism tomorrow (quite how this was relevant in the middle of a eulogy for Charlie Kirk is not clear but that’s the Great Orange Blimp for you). Looks like we can expect mums taking paracetamol during pregnancy to be blamed and folinic acid to be touted as a cure.

  • Here's a recent big Swedish study that found no link between paracetamol/acetaminophen use during pregnancy and increased rates of Autism, ADHD and ID. They suggest that studies that have identified a link are flawed, as those studies did not use siblings as controls. In families where the mother took paracetamol while pregnant with one sibling but not another, the Autism, ADHD and ID rates are the same for all siblings. This suggests the drug has nothing to do with the rate and that other studies are measuring some other confounding familial factor. (For example, it may be that Autistic-gene-carrying mothers are more likely to use the drug during pregnancy, so it could look like the drug is causing Autism, when in fact the link is entirely genetic.)
