Room 101

What would you put into Room 101?

One pet hate per post.

Post as many pet hates as you want until you experience true catharsis!

If you are not familiar with the Room 101 concept, here is a little bit of background from the relevant article on Wikipedia.

Room 101 is a BBC comedy television series based on the radio series of the same name, in which celebrities are invited to discuss their pet hates and persuade the host to consign those hates to oblivion in Room 101, a location whose name was inspired by the torture room in George Orwell's 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four which reputedly contained "the worst thing in the world". Orwell himself named it after a meeting room in Broadcasting House where he would sit through tedious meetings.

  • Food packaging. It infuriates me how it’s supposed to be resealable, easy to open, less mess, less waste. What a load of crap. It’s making me furious even thinking about why the resealable sticker on a packet of rice never sticks and ends up on the floor.

  • With you on those rice (or pasta) stickers. Depending on the brand, it can also be impossible to pull open the packet without tearing it. One has to remove the sticker before using scissors and then spend five minutes trying to get the sticker to stick again (which it does for a few more minutes before trying to make a run for it).

The solution to all your packet-of-rice woes are bag clips (such as these from IKEA). When all else in the world has been confined to Room 101, I will still be clutching a handful of these. They're even on my holiday packing list: "Bag clips (about 15)".

  • I fold over the top and use a large paperclip on the re-sealable bags of ground coffee I use and the powdered energy drink I try to take every day (to increase calorie intake and try to not lose weight) I fold over the top and use a clothes peg.
