Im so happy and proud!

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to tell someone how happy i am with my sons first day at college, havnt slept right in weeks worrying about it and it was fab!

We went early and met with learning support (again lol!) who were great they had assigned someone to be with him all day and scribe for him. His lectures all had the right info on michael and gave a quick introduction to the class about michael, he was instantly accepted in the class, must admit there was a lot of mature students in his class so i dont know if this would have worked with other 16 year olds.

I stayed in the canteen so he knew where i was if needed. It was one of thoese situations where if he knew i was there i wouldnt be needed but if i had gone home his stress levels would have gone into meltdown. I saw him at breaks but didnt sit with him, he was with his classmates. Yes by the end of the day he was stresssed and confused and we had a lot of things to explain to him last night. But he made it through the day, didnt need me and WAS HAPPY and is looking forward to this afternoon at college. He is only in for 2 and a half days a week. He is going by taxi today and im staying home! the taxi doesnt worry him as he was taxied to school so fingers crossed for another good day.

Sorry for going on but my family and friends just dont get how big a thing this is, they think its just a kid going to college thousands do it everyday. Its a huge step for him and im so proud that both the college and he handled it so well.

  • Hi ColinCat,

It is very scary isnt it! I wasnt this uptight when he started school. I think we had thoese rose tinted glasses on back there that thought the schools would be wonderful and we as parents would get a break. what a laugh! it was tough on all of us in the family. Its taught us that we need to be overprotective with our kids, I look around at some of the kids in my area whoes parents dont give any attention or protection and i think i would take the overprotective mum anyday before any of them. We are not stopping our kids from having a full and happy life, quite the opposite we are making that happen. you said you didnt think it would happen and now it is so you must have got the protectivness and freedom mix just right!

Im very lucky just now because my son has a deep interest in all things to do with film so he has started on a nc media and broadcasting course at college, the college also run the HNC and HND course in it so in effect I might not have the stress of university for a while or in fact he may never need to go and could obtain his degree through the college.

Its still early days at college but it went so much better than i thought it would so heres hoping.

all the best for you and yours
