Don't judge a book by it's cover!

A story in life!

Thursday, last week, was a low point for me....

I was highly depressed for no apparent reason and questioning the meaning of life, my purpose in life and all things philosophical, Including the suicide of my darling brother and the untimely & premature death of many of my friends & family over the proceeding years.

In an effort to lift my spirits, I unleashed myself on the front garden in my dodgiest garden togs, secateurs in hand, and ever hopeful I could understand my purpose in life.

As I snipped away, a major accident occurred outside my house, between a biker and several cars.

I intervened with a sense of assertiveness; seldom seen coming from me, as those involved stupidly tried to remove the bikers helmet and untangle him from the bike wreckage.

As I sat, cradling the biker on the tarmac; reassuring him and holding him rock still, he slowly came around to conciousness. We spoke briefly, but that was all.         The paramedics eventually arrived, spinal boarded him & announced he had no breaks or obvious serious injuries and took him away.

Meanwhile, the accident by-standers ridiculed me for my appearance, attire and general demeanor from the roadside. A year ago; or so, i'd have taken deep offence to such ridicule, but I just registered it and walked away.

A few hours later, I rang the hospital and spoke to his wife to see how the biker was doing. According to 'Resus'; and his wife, he was expected to leave resuscitation and return home that night, after routine x-rays and an MRI.

Today; several days later, I spoke to his wife, who informed me he was in Hayward's Heath Hospital with a broken neck and wrist.

Suddenly, my life focus sharpened.

No! I'm not a saint or life saver, but she seemed really grateful for my timely intervention in an event that could have so easily rendered her husband paralysed.

I've not made a true difference to humanity, but I've made the difference to a stranger and his family.

Is this the reason I live? The person that has been riddiculed throughout her life and continues to be for her appearance.

I cried my heart out last night....... somewhat relieved that I intervened when I did, but also grateful for the oppotunity to make a difference.

Last week, I helped a stranger, despite my own severe distress.
Is that difference disguised as an apparent vagabond who sees immediate need and acts, or as a person who is well dressed, observes and ridicules????

Clearly, we shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, nor underestimate our ability to affect peoples lives.

Without judgement or agenda, It seems we can all make a difference.
