New to gaming. Switch advice.

Hi everyone

I’ve seen some of you talk about gaming here, and it’s made me think about trying it too. I’m looking at getting a Nintendo Switch (but I’m not sure about the normal one vs the Lite).

I would probably get a second hand one from Cex.

I’m totally new to gaming — would you recommend it for beginners, and what games should I start with?

Thanks

  • Moo moo meadows, Wario goldmine and Grumble volcano from the Wii are in 8 deluxe too! If you get the DLC add on you will also have Wiii rainbow road too! Just out of curiosity who do you normally play as? I’m normally Yoshi lol

  • Hi

    Good to meet you.

Thank you for responding. It really helps me to get different perspectives. Thank you for the note about the OLED.

I'm pleased you have found something that can take your mind off hospital visits too. Anything that can help with those is a bonus.

Have a good day. Slight smile

  • Hi Lonehare,

I bought my Switch Lite a couple of years ago and I have to say I love playing it. I especially enjoy playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons - that’s probably my favourite, but I also have puzzle games and also Pokémon: Let’s go (Eevee Version). It is great when I am going on a long journey (if I am not driving of course) or if I am going somewhere like hospital for example and I can just curl up in the back of the car and focus on that as it takes my mind off stressful hospital visits.

I am looking into getting Pokémon Sword or Shield for my next game (when I can afford it lol).

I chose the Switch Lite as I didn’t feel I would get much use out of the full OLED version as I’m the only person in my household that plays things like that. Mum does play games on her iPad and so do I, but I do enjoy the Switch Lite as I can play different games than the iPad can give.

My brother and his family in Montreal does have the full version Switch OLED as the kids (9, 5 and 2) can all play games on there together whilst it’s linked to the TV screen - so the OLED Switch is probably the equivalent of the Nintendo Wii.

Choice is up to you of course - I am sure you will enjoy playing it once you get properly into it.

Hope this helps and enjoy your new gaming experience.

    Mweekie xx

  • I think I'm more or less decided on the game, because most or the responses have mentioned it and I did used to enjoy playing it on the Nintendo Wii.

    Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

  • Ha ha

    Busted!!

I do have a number of items in my cart. Probably ever model of Nintendo switch that has been mentioned on here.

I have yet to cross that bridge of decision.

  • Everything so finely balanced. It's a thing of beauty!

I like to add far more than I need to my shopping cart—several different models of everything. Then I get decision paralysis when it comes time to remove some of them again. I end up not buying anything. Works every time.

  • Any time! I’m like that with buying things like I want to get whilst they’re in stock but then I feel do I do more research. If you get the switch 2 in time I recommend Mario Kart world too!

  • Great

    Thank you.

I have items in my Cex cart.

    My ADHD is saying

    Buy them now!!

    My autism is saying

    Do some more research Rofl

  • Really, people are strange.

    It works for me.Slight smile

  • I’d like to add that I recommend Super Mario Odyssey, Kirby’s return to dreamland deluxe, Kirby star allies, Princess Peach showtime and Yoshi's crafted world. Admittedly the last two are probably more aimed at a younger audience but I am a sucker for anything cute and IMAO Yoshis and Theets from showtime are just super adorable. Also if you want to have a more chill simulation game but be creative then I also recommend Animal Crossing New Horizons!

  • Glad to have of some help. Not many people complement how I write so thank you for that!

  • Okay

    Thank you

    This really helps.

I had sort of narrowed the game to the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Now I have one in my Cex cart.

  • Okay

    Thank you

This is very informative and written in a way that is easy for me to understand.

I feel like I'm forming a good idea of what I'm going to purchase.

  • Coming from a massive game collector, I would totally go with the Nintendo Switch OLED model. The biggest reason why is with joycon drift. Switches are terrible when it comes to the durability of the analog sticks. At least with a normal model, you can replace joycons if they drift, but on a Switch Lite, you can’t.

As for the games, since you’re new to gaming, I would recommend Super Mario Wonder, Kirby and the Forbidden Land, Super Smash Bros Ultimate and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

  • Ok so we have a few models out now

    1. Nintendo switch
    2. Nintendo switch lite
    3. Nintendo Switch OLED
    4. Nintendo switch 2

So the Switch is an LCD display and you can use that on both the TV or handheld. The battery life handheld isn’t the longest. The switch lite is also LCD but you can’t use that on TV as it is dedicated to handheld play, it is also smaller but should be cheaper. I believe the battery life is better but I don’t know as I don’t have the lite. The OLED has well an OLED screen obviously but the screen size is 7inches but the console itself is the same size as the original switch. The battery life does seem to last longer compared to the original switch. The switch 2 is bigger in size compared to the original and OLED let alone the lite and the screen size is 7.9 inches but is actually LCD, but I do find the colours to be just as good, if not better than the OLED. The switch 2 also seems to have better frame rate for even the old switch games. Eg: Mario odyssey runs at a better quality on the switch 2 compared to the other switches. You can also save more data and screenshots/video recordings from your gameplay on the switch 2 but you need a special SD card and that is quite pricy, and the games aren’t cheap either and of course the switch 2 is £396 alone and still seems hard to get hold of. The bundles seem to be available but of course more pricy. I also don’t think the battery life is as long as the OLED either but possibly better than the original.

I would recommend gaming if you like the look of it. I recommend you could start with something like Mario kart or something, depends what genres and franchises you like. My favs tend to be Mario, Yoshi or Kirby things.

As for the consoles, maybe start off getting a second hand one as you said and see if you like it, if so then maybe splash out for the switch 2 and if not, then don't.

    Hope this helps

  • No please, waffle on, the more recommendations I get the better. I'm coming into this world pretty clueless apart from Mario cart.

Thank you for taking the time to respond

  • Hi lovely, I am not a hardcore gamer but I really enjoy cosy games. If you like relaxing, peaceful, cute games I really recommend Ooblets - it's a really cute creature collection and farming game, Paleo Pines - is also a really cute farming game with dinosaurs, it's fantastic. If you want a game that is easy to play whilst listening to music or a podcast, I really recommend Cat Cafe Manager.

If you like relaxing puzzle games I recommend Yoku's Island Express - it's like pinball and a platformer, and the music is really lovely. The Shape of Things is a really soothing puzzle game where you put object back together, the music is really soothing too. A puzzle game with a bit more of a story and really cute characters is Tinykin - it is the first game I actually 100% completed. I have an obsession with miniatures and you play as a creature as small as an insect, there is something really fun about exploring a house as a bug.

I have a few more recommendations but I don't want to waffle on too much Smiley

  • No worries at all

I need all the information I can get.

I don't even know what derailing the thread actually means, so I wouldn't have noticed.

I haven't noticed anything. Slight smile

  • Okay

    Great

    thank you for the information.
