New to gaming. Switch advice.

Hi everyone

I’ve seen some of you talk about gaming here, and it’s made me think about trying it too. I’m looking at getting a Nintendo Switch (but I’m not sure about the normal one vs the Lite).

I would probably get a second hand one from Cex.

I’m totally new to gaming — would you recommend it for beginners, and what games should I start with?

Thanks

  • The Switch lite is mostly for portable use so you can use it on the go. So if you gon on holiday, on a train, to school or college, etc. The Lite is smaller, has a smaller screen and it has no TV output but it's convenient. It's pretty much a handheld device, like the DS but better.

Personally I would go for the Switch Lite. I don't go out much but when I do it's nice to take it with me as it relaxes me if I'm on public transport or in a coffee shop and the battery life is really good.

My must have games are the Zelda games, Pokemon, Mario Kart 8, Kirby and the forgotten land and I love Luigi's Mansion 3. Oh and give Two Point Hospital a try as well. It's a fun hospital management simulation game. I have that one on PC as well.

  •   ‘s got some great advice here. Biggest one is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for sure because that one is pretty good for beginners. My personal go-to game is Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Kirby games tend to be fairly easy, so Kirby and the Forgotten Land is another great recommendation. I think The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild could be a little tricky for beginners, but it is a beautifully made game. I haven’t played Two Point Hospital, but from what I’ve seen I could see that being a great introduction into the “simulator” genre of games. Pokémon’s another favorite of mine. Maybe if you are going to try that give Pokémon Sword or Shield a try first? I thought those two were fairly easier than Pokémon Scarlet or Violet.

I also agree with Maisie that I’d recommend the Switch Lite. I’ve had both, and I find that I play handheld mode 95% of the time, with the 5% being when me and my kids all play together.

  • Thank you for the advice.

It's good to get the extra details on how it fits around your lifestyle too.

I have played Mario cart before but it's ages ago when my son was little on a Nintendo Wii. It was my favourite game. I have heard about the Zelda games but I'll do some research into what they're about.
