is this normal

Today i was told my son has austism and within the same 15min appointment i have also been discharged from all services!!! angry, upset doesn't come close i don't know how to help my son and where to turn to next please can someone tell me how it is they can right a kid of a 6yrs old

  • Seems like a quick appointment!  Mine was probably 30 minutes for the final appointment.  I doubt I'd have had any follow up if my daughter hadn't been on medication.  We have the follow up next week but as I withdrew her from the medication, I'm not expecting her to go again.

I think your next step will be to get the education department involved, ask for an EP to do an assessment so school can find out where your child needs help and if a statement will be needed.  Your son may not need a statement yet, depends on the severity of his problems - my daughter is in the process of getting hers after 3 attempts but the difference in her assessments from 7 yrs old to 13 is huge so although she could cope with support before, now she can't.

Did the consultant offer to send you on an ASD parenting course or any OT provision?

  • Hi, absolutely understand your anger.  It's quite a while since my son was diagnosed, at school, etc so I don't want to give any advice which may be wrong.  There's lots of info via the home pg + the posts to guide you.  There's also the ipsea site which I've heard is useful on education issues.  There's the nas helpline (you may get an ansaphone but I understand they will ring back) so you can speak to someone.  These sources will be able to help you with your rights, amongst other things. IMO you shd apply for a statement of educational needs via your council so he gets the support he needs at school - I presume he's in mainstream.  I'd also query whether he needs speech therapy.  Also, if you want to,  check out the home pg to see if there are any parents groups in your part of the country so you can talk to parents who understand.  Ask anything you want on this site, people will try + help.  Bw.
