What are your special interests?

I really love learning about other peoples hyperfixations/special interests and - although I struggle to show it - get so happy and excited when someone shares theirs with me. It's probably one of the only things I like more than my own special interest tbh... I love it even more when someone feels comfortable enough to not only tell me what theirs is, but also tell me every detail about it. Even if I have no idea what any of it means, I still love listening.

I'm rambling so I'll just get to the point; I'm curious about everyone here. I had a *** night and this is the first thing that came to mind to make me feel better so I'd love it if someone would be willing to indulge...

  • That’s a really cool thing to ask, thanks for sharing! Mine are various things like anything related to Taylor Swift, books (specifically young adult ones) anything remotely LGBTQ+, baking, cats, soft toys, the tv show of Heartstopper (in case you couldn’t tell I’m extremely gay haha), dolphins, lists, listening to rain/smelling fresh rain on the pavement or grass, anything related to romance (I’m a sucker for love stories), trains, Japanese cherry blossoms, stars, fireworks and icebreaker activities (very specific I know but back in secondary, in drama class we used to play these icebreaker games at the start which I love but I can’t remember the names of them sadly). Seriously though, thank you to the person who started this topic, I’ve never had a place where I can share my special interests so thanks for that Slight smile

  • I love doctor who bit my subjects i cant shut up abour are thr cirucs snd Taylor swift

  • I actually had a hyper fixation on psychology a few years ago but now it's more of an on-and-off interest on 'why' and 'how'.

what's your favourite historical event/fact/etc.? mine would have to be either the Black Death (I am fascinated by the disease and how it works, not the fact that it took out a good chunk of the human population, don't worry Sweat smile), the mummification process, or the melification process...

  • I KNOW RIGHT! I love novels and am dabbling in a few video games currently. I also share that same ideology about AI... it's all so fascinating! Grin

  • I actually have a record player at home and a few vinyls too... I like listening to my Gerry Monroe one most Relaxed

  • I love science and anatomy but know almost nothing about the rest Sweat smile I would love to know more about it all, though

  • a couple of years ago - like you with frozen - I was super into my little pony but have now moved onto anime...

my dad always played 70's-90's music for us on our way to school so I can understand why you love it... that is when music was actually good...

I can't really handle musicals unless they are children's shows where the purpose is child entertainment (e.g. frozen, my little pony, etc) but I do understand why others enjoy it.. its kind of an 'each to their own' thing, eh.

I love Doctor Who, especially - I think - the 11th doctor (I couldn't really keep up with the constant reincarnations since I started the show from a later season rather than the start)

  • Hi there

I have quite a lot of things I love/special interests but I think I have a top 4, which if you don't mind I might list from 4 to top 1:-

    4. FROZEN - Even though I was in my late teens when the first one came out, I've been obsessed it since, especially with Elsa and "Let it go". I am probably one the biggest FROZEN/ELSA fans out there... and probably one of the oldest in the fan base lol Joy It drove my parents crazy, the number of times I replayed "Let it go" RoflSnowflakeHeart

    3. QUEEN - I grew up listening to QUEEN thanks to my parents and I guess as I got older and learnt more of the history of band, I'd definitely consider them to be my top favourite band ever being at number 1 in my list of favourite bands. I'm particularly in awe of the late great Freddie Mercury and consider him my musical idol

    2. Musical Theatre - I've always loved musicals, but it wasn’t until I reached my mid teens when my mum signed me up for an after schools drama club that I discovered the world of musical theatre...AND I LOVED IT Heart eyes Since then there has never been a year where I haven't been to see a different musical GrinMusical noteNotesPerforming artsHeart

    1. Doctor Who - This is the one topic that if somebody brought it up that'd you'd struggle to shut me up. My dad introduced me to it when I was a little girl when it came back on tv in 2005. I fell in  love instantly star-struckHeart️and I have not missed a single episode since. The astonishment and bewildered looks on their faces when they discover the level of  knowledge I've retained over the years Joy

  • I have a second-hand DeLorean if you want to complete the project!

    (Looks awesome, BTW.)

  • fascinating project - thanks for sharing

    all the best with it!

  • sorry for delay in reply   blimey that's some weight on a small footprint - will make an interesting dinner conversation piece!

  • I won't be breeding tritium from lithium as there are all sorts of health and safety problems associated with that (my health and my safety) - although it is more difficult to get fusion just using deuterium it is a lot safer.

  • I think I worked out the whole thing would be 200-300kg, although it was only approximate and I was still working out how much shielding would be needed and the costs of the copper etc I'll need to check the figures when I get a bit further on - If it ends up being much more than my initial estimate I may need to move the dining table and have it in the dining room as that has a solid concrete floor.

  • ps 6 inches of lead! - reinforced floor required?

  • fabulous! I did wonder about the fuel source... breeding tritium from lithium I have now read about - very special special interest you have there - oh and you've cracked how to download an image - blowed if i could when I tried.  Hehe - maybe that's why you make a tokamak and I make model aeroplanes.  Thanks for the reply

  • If you are interested in the details of the tokamak I'm looking at building it is based upon the Medusa tokamak:

    Medusa Tokamak

However my one will have a stainless steel vacuum chamber and instead of shielding the room the tokamak is based in as used on most of the ones run by Universities I'll have six inches of lead to block the X-rays.  It will only run for around 3mS each time, which cannot be extended as the cost of either high temperature superconductors or the cryogenic system required for standard superconductors is out of my price range.  Also to power the device I'll be using banks of capacitors and extending the time would also be prohibitively expensive.  The device including the shielding should end up being a cylindrical shape around four feet across and four feet tall and so small enough to be situated at one end of my lounge.  I'll also be running it on deuterium as it is easily available and is safe to handle.

  • Just of late, somewhat by necessity, I have found myself with autism as a special interest.   I have rather taken the "learn as much as you can about it" advice after late diagnosis and can't stop now.

Before this I spent a lot of time exploring human movement and interactions from a "biopsychosocial" perspective and Taoist philosophy and arts.

I collect and build 1;72 scale plastic model aeroplanes.  I have made a special special interest in building models of each of the 45 fighter sqns of the US 8th air force - I'm over half way there :-)

Terry Pratchett books - had to read every new one.

As a child, butterflies and science

Facebook knows all this about me and pushes me links by the dozen.

This community has become one as well based on how much time I spend here.

My close family our dogs and a few close friends.

I roam thro' BBC podcasts while gardening and allotment work - hardly a special interest but it keeps me interested and active.

oh and cricket - if there's an England match on the radio I have to listen if I can.

Can elaborate, of course, if you want me to  :-)

  • tokamak hey? I guess that explains the nuclear radiation symbol  getting that "up and running" would be amazing! all the best with it you certainly are up for a challenge and you have a great skill set  :-)
