UK meteorological autumn - places to visit?

During UK meteorological autumn - do you have favourite ideas of places to visit?

In the UK, Meteorological Autumn;

begins on: 1 September, and

ends on: 30 November.

Sometimes, as autumn arrives; I can find myself needing a bit of an excuse - to prompt me into venturing outdoors to visit somewhere interesting (while the weather holds reasonably fair).

As draft plans begin to formulate, I look out for some potential prompts - to visit somewhere beyond my local neighbourhood:

- National Trust (England) "Heritage Open Days" (2025) take place:

between Friday 12 and Sunday 21 September.

"Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture offering free access to heritage events and activities across England.

There are thousands of free in-person events running across the country with a wealth of hidden places and stories to discover."

(With other events in the UK:

- "Open Doors Days" in Wales,

- "European Heritage Open Days" in Northern Ireland, and

- "Doors Open Days" in Scotland).

- UK Autumn Equinox - Monday 22 September (19:20 BST) 2025.

- UK Michaelmas: Monday 29 September 2025 (some.market towns hold a Michaelmas Fair around this time of year.

What / where are your autumnal favourite places to visit?

  • If ya’ll ever feel brave enough to cross over to the USA, Vermont is gorgeous in autumn. Beautiful deciduous woodland mountains, great food, lovely people. Probably not much to do, but it’s still a great place. I went to school there and have nothing but good things to say about it.

  • I did Vermont and New Hampshire in the fall of 1993. I timed it right smack dab in the middle of "leaf-peeping season"**. Wow! Just. Wow! I like a colo(u)rful leaf at the best of times, but I nearly lost my s— entirely with what was on offer there. It still brings a smile to my face after all these years. Everywhere was like you'd see in the picture postcards (or whatever new-fangled thing has replaced picture postcards).

** I just now looked up "leaf-peeking season" and realised I heard it wrong 30+ years ago and it's actually "leaf-peeping season". Or maybe I heard it right, but the name has changed...
