Angels

Does anyone believe in angels?

What do you believe them to be?

What about nefilim, the half human half angel hybrids that the Great Flood from the bible was supposed to have wiped out?

I find the whole subject fascinating, quite a few cultures have angels in thier religious beliefs, some of them not from an Abrahamic tradition.

As someone said on another thread, do angels have the equipment to procreate?

Lucifer who was said to have been cast out of heaven by god along with his followers and went to hell and became the devil and demons etc, did hell already exist? Was it vacant when Lucifer took up residence there? A Lucifer figure appears in many religions and myths to, whats-his-face being punnished for giving humans fire and the other one who pushes a rock up a hill everyday only for it to roll back down every night and the one who has his liver pecked out by and eagle on a daily basis, why do we need these transgressive figures who appear to want to aid human development only to be punished by god who seemingly dosen't want us to develope?

There are also lots of myths about Watchers, Grigori and others who are the decendents of the Nephilim and keep watch ove rthe earth and certain individials and maybe bloodlines?

Parents
  • Yes, I believe in angels. They are pure spirit and they don't have bodies. I am Catholic, so we have many many books on the angels and teachings. We each have an angel, called a guardian angel. We do not name our angel, ever. He is superior to us, a little like a governess (that children had in the past) and much more intelligent than we are. He protects us, guides us and leads us to do good (what we are made for) and if we comply with him, we will go to heaven and be with him forever. If we don't listen to him and damn ourselves, we'll go to hell and he will go back to heaven. He only has one charge. He was given the choice by God to love you, his vocation for want of a better word. You also have angels for families, countries, institutions. There are 9 choirs of angel, each ascending choir is 3x larger than the one before, the lowet choir is gaurdian angels - each person who has ever existed has had their own guardian angel and each person who exists will have one too. This makes for a very large amount of angels. Only the lowest two choirs of angels have dealings with humans - the others all worship God and do His bidding - which is mostly taking care of us and our the world.

There are fallen angels of whom the leader is Satan (also called Lucifier or Beelezbab - he has 3 names to mock the Blessed Trinity- God) and he is in hell. He can only come out and tempt people, along wiht his demons, with God's permission. God is the overall boss. Satan nor any demons can do anything without his says so. God allows demons to tempt, oppress, obessess or possess us for our good. We fight and become holy or at least holier. Our angel helps us battle evil. At the beginning of creation - the angels were given a test - they were shown Christ and His descent on earth and had to choose to accept this or not. Satan and his demons would not worship God in human form and said they will not serve. Satan partically was jealous because God came to earth in a woman's womb and he wanted to be the womb God would use to come to earth and could not stand to see a human given such honour above him. Angels have perfect knowledge and so they were given this one test and those that would serve are in heaven now enjoying the beatific vision. Those who would not, are in hell suffering unimaginable torment.

Interestingly, it is believed that one group of the fallen angels (demons) had the duty of caring for trees and so now in hell they would try to destroy them, by getting humans to destroy them.

  • Interesting DotK, do guardian angels only ever look after one person and then go and do other stuff, or do they, when the person they've been overseeing dies, look after someone else?

I've never heard of angles being shown Jesus and his story before he was born, presumably a very long time before at around the time of genesis?

Have you ever listened to 'Adam Lay Ybounden', the version I'm familiar with is performed by the Mediael Babes, it was written around the 15th C and gives a very interesting version of Adam being happy to wait for Mary, Mother of Jesus.

  • They only ever look after one person. That's their only mission. After the persons death they go to heaven with or without the person.

Yes 4000 years before Jesus birth - when the world was made. The angels were created on the first day of creation with the heavens - it's believed they fell (or not) right away. Most of the early faith from the beginning of the world until the 1500's was word of mouth ie the oral tradition. These stories have been passed down largely through oral tradition and some written tablets that survived form Jesus time or pre. The oral tradition is called Tradition and is now mostly written down, some is lost some things are just done as they were generations before. It's a bit like traditions in your family traditions passed down from mother to daughter etc.

No, I've never heard of 'Adam Lay Ybounden' sounds interesting.
