Navigating Belonging as a Neurodivergent Person

Hi everyone,
I’ve been reflecting on how different environments—both personal and professional—can shape our sense of belonging, especially when you're neurodivergent.
Over time, I’ve noticed that when I share ideas that are a bit outside the box or express myself in ways that feel natural to me (like using auditory stims to stay regulated), they’re sometimes misunderstood or labeled in ways that feel dismissive. These reactions can be tough. Even when you try to brush them off, they can leave you questioning whether your way of thinking and being is truly welcome.
What’s even more complex is that sometimes these norms are reinforced by others who are also neurodivergent. I get it—there’s pressure to fit in, and sometimes that leads to policing each other’s differences. But it still hurts, and it can feel isolating.
I used to work at Epic Games. I’m not there anymore, and while I won’t go into the details, I can say that the experience taught me a lot about the importance of psychological safety and authenticity in the workplace.
I’m curious—has anyone else felt this? How do you protect your confidence and stay true to yourself when your ideas or behaviors are misunderstood—even by those who might share similar experiences?
To anyone else navigating these issues, you’re not alone.
