Harry Potter

I know there are a few fellow Harry Potter obsessives on this forum. Harry Potter is a subject that gives me a lot of joy and can help me when I'm struggling.

I just wondered if anyone was up for chatting some Harry Potter - favourite characters, favourite scenes, differences between books and films etc?

Please no JK debates though. Just light hearted discussion of the content of the books/films themselves.

  • My favourite book was the third one but I wasn’t very happy with the amount of important stuff they left out, such as the meaning of the names of the marauders map and why they turned into animagi.

  • I struggle to pick one scene, I really do. But I think my absolute favourite is when they're putting up the defences around the castle. There's something so powerful about it. Closely followed by Dobby nearly dropping the chandelier on Bellatrix.

My favourite film is Philosophers Stone for nostalgic reasons. Second best is Deathly Hallows part 1.

I prefer the book Half Blood Prince as it gives you a lot more of the lessons Dumbledore gives Harry and the memories linked to Voldemort's past. So many things suddenly make sense after that book but a lot of it is missed out in the film.

  • My favourite Harry Potter scene is the rise of Voldemort in the goblet of fire I mean wow it makes me cringe and I’m on the edge of my seat. My favourite film is the half blood prince because it’s so dark and it makes you hate snape. In the deathly hallows part 2 I soon love snape again as he was the good guy all along.

  • Thanks. Appreciate the help.

  • I'm not sure how I'd find it.

There is an index of the sites which have HP fan fiction sections: https://fanlore.org/wiki/List_of_Harry_Potter_Archives

I'm having a look through them later today.

I've no idea if the sites are all safe or suitable for shared viewing (some require registration and no doubt some will carry adverts and I've seen some very adult themed adverts when searching previously) so please be aware I cannot vouch for their suitability.

One site that looks promising is https://www.fanfiction.net/book/Harry-Potter/ and I've seen some positive reviews of it so hope there is some good reading to be found there. The stories are quite a mixed selection (some sci-fi, alternative timelines, what-if approaches etc) but there is a review setting for each one so it helps filter out some of the less appealing stuff.

I have no connection to any of these sites for full disclosure.

  • No I've never delved into that world. I'm not sure how I'd find it. I'm sure there is some very good fanfiction out there but for every good there is going to be some really terrible. I'm aware of a popular one called All the young dudes which is about the Marauders but I've never given it a go.

  • Do you read much of the fan fiction that people write (based around the Potterverse)?

There is clearly a wealth of world building and stories around the world / through time that can be explored that the author would never be able to put together so it is nice to see so many fans creating their own spin-offs and stories.

I would be keen to hear where people find such work.

    Please no JK debates though

Good call. People need to learn to separate the art from the artist and let others enjoy the art in its native form.
