Tell us about your self projects

Hi everyone, in my life for whatever reasons I haven’t been able to work full time. In my 20s and 40s I spent substantial amounts of time in inpatient for an eating disorder and didn’t have a normal youth. I was also diagnosed late with autism and several needs are moderate and I have marked sensory needs. I also live alone and do not have children.

Anyway, what has given me joy is the self projects in my life and the voluntary work I can do. I thought by discussing these it could give some one the idea to do their own self project and also to inspire others to pick up something new. Self projects I think can help people to keep going. I am training to do a voluntary job right now and that will give me joy to, but am here to discuss that in this thread.

Me-

The first project I did was for eating disorders awareness week in 2021. I lost a dear friend and was motivated to release an article to coincide with eating disorders awareness week in the UK. I also took the time to tell my own story and discuss some key things I felt were of concern. This got good feedback and led to me working with the NHS voluntary on a project and I ended as a co author in the Lancet which was great. They also did a filming of an event and that was good as well.

I also had a waterfall project to film and visit all the artificial waterfalls in London parks and Gardens and upload them to Youtube and have a separate channel for that. To finish that of I treated myself to a day trip to Zurich to see the largest waterfall the Rhinefalls. It was a blast.

I also did one for my faith. This was great for my spirit and soul and for me the best thing I have done. I created a blog and shared my story and was trying to reach people in a similar situation to me. I shared the link on Facebook and friends and family.  I got some cards printed and gave the link out to the blog in church and in left them in a neighbouring church to be read. I liked to put the cards to in our local supermarket which has their own noticeboard for people to take if they wanted. I gave a few cards to people in the street who I felt may relate very rarely or who I knew. I posted the cards in blocks in lower deprived areas and returned to where I used to live which was great to do so. I also made some made some covering videos. I have extended this now the posts on my blog and even used some from my studies days to blog about so it is not in waste. I enjoy making small videos for my faith. I also created a forum to archive my posts on my faith in the last year that I made online. It was such a good thing for me.  I have posted the link to my story of my faith here which you can find by searching my past posts so there is no need to do so here again.

I have done other things in my life earlier like a like mental health support forum for eating disorders, but will just discuss this three here and look forward to learning about your self projects. I think they are more than just being interests.

  • You have invested in some excellent projects.

I like to have a project on the go and I’ve had a few in the past, but they have been useful mostly just to me as I like to work alone, and a few people that I have known or been involved with. Some of these have included ‘Native Mammals in Kenya’, which was a very basic guide for people on safari, and I made a basic interactive guide to the ‘Archaeology of the Ancient Near East’ for students.

I have completed one research project that was developed from my masters and has been published. It is sitting in libraries in the UK, but would be of limited interest to most people unless they were interested in a niche archaeological related work.

At the moment I am researching informally, images of God and religions/beliefs of ancient Mesopotamia. I haven’t access to anything other than open sources, although Cambridge University is allowing free access to its published resources until 31st July, and there are quite a few relevant papers available. I would love to complete a semi distance, part time PhD in something related to ancient material culture, but I would be unlikely to get funding as I am retired and I couldn’t cope with team work anymore.

  • At the moment I am researching informally, images of God and religions/beliefs of ancient Mesopotamia.

I have a lifelong interest in Mesopotamia.

I have visited the British Museum to see their artefacts and intend to go again.

    This book is excellent

  • Oh jolly good Debbie, that looks like exactly what I need, thank you. It is so important to have good photographs of the artefacts and I would love take a trip to the British Museum.

I wish I had a philologist to hand. I am struggling to digest English translations of the cuneiform sources at the moment, and moreover, not all the translations agree. Some of them are as dry as dust, but I don’t want to miss any important details. I will be glad to move on to looking at the archaeological evidence and at other material culture.

The more I look at some of the Mesopotamian figurines and translations of the cuneiform, the more I see the similarities between religion back then and today. Descriptions of the gods’ physical attributes are remarkably similar to descriptions of the physicality of God in the Christian Old testament. Religion was used by a patriarchal and political elite to control and manipulate a community.  A population was unwittingly coerced into doing dreadful things and justifying it in the name of a god. Some things never change. That is not to say that there are also good caring people in all religions today, but male dominance and religious coercion for political ends is a common theme.

  • Also, the discovery and transport of the monuments I find fascinating (although a little disquieting in this age of apparent non appropriation of the culture of others).

I agree, and I like to think that things like that could never happen again.

  • What aspects of Mesopotamia are you interested in?

Similar to you (which that book covers very well).

Their monuments were truly amazing considering the tools they had at hand (well, all things considered actually).

Also, the discovery and transport of the monuments I find fascinating (although a little disquieting in this age of apparent non appropriation of the culture of others).

I like your joke too Blush

  • LOL! I’ll take three philologists!

What aspects of Mesopotamia are you interested in? I particularly like the art and representation of the different cultures, Sumerian, Akkadian and Assyrian etc.

Why did the philologist get kicked out of the library?
They kept trying to "deconstruct" the books! Grin

  • I wish I had a philologist to hand.

You wait all day for a philologist then 3 come along together Blush (bus related joke).

What you are doing is of great interest to me A.

All the best for the project.

    Absolutely.
