Grinding teeth / jaw clenching

Hi all

I have just been thinking about a lot of my teeth and jaw issues may relate to my frequent teeth grinding and or jaw clenching.

Anybody else suffer with this issue? And if so have you found anything to help? Are chew toys any good was just looking at them but not sure….any thoughts would be very welcome .

Had a lot of jaw and tooth pain and stiffness this week….

  • I have done this for years and have had several different types of mouth guard fitted by the dentist. These were to protect my teeth from wear but they didn’t do much to help the slight jaw pain I would get from time to time, yet my teeth are definitely less sensitive now.

In the early days the mouth guards were hard and I found them difficult to tolerate, often throwing them out of the bed in the middle of the night. The softer flexible guards are much nicer, but I have found that they encourage me to chew on them and they would last me only a few months before I would chew holes right through.

  • Thanks for replying, is this something you wear at night?

  • Yes, I just wear it at night, on the lower jaw, which makes it more tolerable than on the upper jaw. I subconsciously chew before going to sleep. If I catch myself on, I try to stop chewing. The guard is really for sleep time teeth grinding, but it definitely encourages me to use it like chewing gum (I don’t use chewing gum) as it is a bit squishy.
