Mandate Tolerance - Expect Resentment

All attempts to make us 'Shiny Happy People - Holding Hands' end up causing friction. Old historical grievances reemerge. Suddenly, the attempts to bring about World Peace cause another Global Conflict.

We no longer have Mutual Respect. We have the law of the Jungle. All because we followed the directives of Old Enemies - Germany and France - while decimating relations with Old Allies - such as Serbia and Russia.

Fight-or-Flight is now a way of life.

  • I don’t understand what your point is regarding the link you have posted. Are you suggesting that the man who burned the Quran is jointly responsible for global conflict or is the victim of global conflict?

A sense of proportionality is needed around this case.

The man was rightly charged and convicted of a religiously aggravated public order offence and of using disorderly behaviour. The judge said his “actions in burning the Quran where you did were highly provocative, and your actions were accompanied by bad language in some cases directed toward the religion and were motivated at least in part by hatred of followers of the religion”.

Clearly the offence was highly provocative because it was targeting followers of the religion. I can only imagine how it might feel to be the target of such actions and hatred.

The other man has been charged with causing actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon. His trial is to take place in the future.

It is bizarre to make this case about anything more than the facts.

The world has changed rapidly in the last few decades, and more than ever we need respect for people of all religions and none. Perhaps if social media, certain politicians and individuals would stop making incidents like this into something bigger than they deserve, it could go a long way in promoting a society of tolerance and mutual respect, no matter our background or religion.

  • we have no true alies. only ourselves. - well some of the old common wealth countries maybe. Canada, austrailia etc.

And section 5 of the Public Order Act has been a stain on british law for a long time now. people have been campaigning against it since 2013 (see video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUezfuy8Qpc ). The goverment tweeked the law then but the change in wording clearly had no real effect. The law needs to go.

  • It is a tricky area but there are better ways to make a protest than what the man did. It was illegal and not very respectful and doesn’t  help in today’s mad world. Agree with Lotus’s point below the man’s attacker in my view was a more serious crime? If it was true, attacking someone either a knife and using physical violence is also not legal? There is no justification for this that I can see. It’s important at least to me that we treat everyone equally without favour. Given special treatment can lead to resentment and further hostility…..

  • Hi Desmond, sorry but I don't really understand your post, but I read the article - thanks for sharing it.

I believe that everyone should respect each other, but is it disrespecting individuals to criticise their religion? Is it ok for someone whose religion has been criticised and their sacred book burnt to attack the person who did that, with no legal repercussions? Is it ok for UK law to blame the defendant for the attack on him, because he "provoked it"? Should we all have the right not to be offended?

I don't know the answer - what do others think?
