How do you dress?

I've often made a few questionable choices with my clothes through the years and have often got it wrong. In the last year or so I've decided to go for comfort over conformity, and I've always been more attracted to bright colours rather than black, grey or beige and the muted tones that seem to be popular these days. I don't want to look like everyone else anymore.

My partner and I recently discovered a shop in Matlock Bath, Derbyshire, and they sell all sorts of cool clothes. It's hippie style so there are patchwork trousers, harem pants, and loose shirts and t-shirts, printed designs etc. I absolutely love it and it's what I wear now. I'm happy to be the weird guy wearing the hat, assorted coloured clothes and sandals or barefoot shoes.

What's your style and what do you like wearing?

  • Badly, I often have to wear what fits rather than what I like. I dread the day M&S stop doing longer length trousers because that will seriously effect me, shops have such a mad way of clothes buying, I can often get trousers from other shops in summer that are long enough for me, but not in winter. Mens trousers don't fit me because I'm woman shaped and mens trousers often end up wearing me rather than the other way around. Most tops and jumpers are to short, some would barely cover my nipples let alone sit on my waist and whats with arm holes that would barely fit a broomstick? I don't wear dresses or blouses because they're to short, even when they're supposed to long, the bust darts are badly positioned, under the armpits, which ruins the point of them and pulls the garment out of shape. If I go for plus sized clothes, they often seem to be made for fat midgets with neck holes a big as the waist hole and of course the obligatory tiny armholes.

We have a shop that sells hippyish clothes, but its very hit and miss getting something that will fit, let alone something I will like in a fabric and colour I can wear. I've written to etsy sellers and other small clothing companies about the length of thier trousers all to no avail, they have what they have and aren't willing to do more, even when they say they make them themselves.

I have problems with shoes because my feet are triangular in shape, wide across the toes, with high arches and instep and narrow heels, a lot of shoes and boots do womens sizes up to a 7 and then above that to a mans fitting which is to wide in the heel for me and they're like flip flops.

I like the layered lagan look which is really nice for older, taller women, but I'm having trouble finding stuff the shop I used to use has got expensive and the quality has got really bad and they keep using patterns, jewelled diamonds and stuff that I really don't like.

My DiL gets me some tops from Indiam but the colours are pretty limited because their often so bright and would swamp me with my pale northern skin tones.

I wish I could still handsew but my fingers are to wonky now and as for a sewing machine, as with so much other stuff, we don't get on!
