Fear of swimming pool covers

Ever since I was a child I have had a fear of swimming pool covers and getting trapped under one. I havent been in a swimming pool for years because of this. Whenever I used to go near one I would break out in cold sweats. Has anyone experienced this?

  • Have you spoken to a therapist about this? It might bring you some comfort and he or she will be able to offer you good advice on how to best tackle this.

I had a near drowning in a pool when I was 6 years old, my trying to swim in the big pool when I escaped from the kiddies pool lol. It didn't go well and if it wasn't for a very observant and quick lifeguard I wouldn't be here now for sure.

My anxiety with swimming and swimming pools was terrible for the best part of 10-15 years until I spoke to a therapist who helped me deal with this. Something that helped me was getting a small inflatable pool, made for kids but it provided a great small way to enter a pool in the privacy of my garden where I could gently expose myself to the pool and water.

It helped a lot and now I am mostly over this particular fear. I did it in my own time and way under the guidance of my therapist.

Living in fear and anxiety can really pull you down. I hope you can find someone or something that works for you.

  • I actually do swim at the beach for this reason. I was just curious if anyone else has this fear.

  • i have definitely thought about how scary it would be to be trapped under a swimming pool cover. but sounds like it can really stress you out. have you thought about going to the beach to swim instead? its lovely. :) i actually prefer it to public pools anyway for multiple reasons!
