Trade tariffs and buying stuff

We need a few new electrical items for the house, like a washing machine and maybe a new telly, I'm owndering if we should buy now in case things get really crazy in the coming months? I knw that tariffs will most effect Americans, but the rest of us will be impacted too, probably in ways we don't expect, things could get cheaper, or they could get dearer. Anyone have any ideas?

  • I knew th company was South Korean, but I didn't know where all the parts are made. It seems Trump has changed his mind again on tariffs, any reckon how well he does at golf has any effect on who and how much tariffs he imposes? It seems as good an explaination as any!

  • There may be some small fluctuation in prices but I can't see it affecting prices too much.  LG is currently the most popular washing machine in the UK, but they manufacture in South Korea, China, Thailand, USA and Poland.  His tariffs wont affect them as they already manufacture in the USA.  So no extra cheap stock for us.

  • Thats sort of what I thought, I did wonder if prices would go down as countries seek to dump goods they would otherwise sell to America onto everyone else?

  • As Disraeli said, "There are lies, damned lies and statistics!"

China's tariffs are more punitive than America's. We actually got off lightly, 10%, from President Trump. It's a carrot and stick, to try and get us to end the Defamation of those who Question authority.

The EU, on the other hand, denounce America; while constantly bringing the begging bowl across the Pond.

  • If you need them (and you seem to, according to your recent posts) then buy them.

I'm not sure that many large electrical items we find in the UK are actually made in China or the US, but as you say, there could be a knock-on effect by the time that clown in the White House has finished playing around with the markets to the benefit of his fellow billionaires.

In all honesty, large electrical items haven't risen substantially in price for many years.  I think they are likely due a hike sooner or later.
