Horse riding

Hi, I am looking for some help. I want to introduce my 8 year old son to the world of horses. He has as yet not been diagnosed with ASD and we are at that very frustrating drawn out period awaiting his assessment. He is extremely anxious, has difficulty regulating his moods and social problems. He has never slept through a night and at home needs my constant attention. He cannot be in a room by himself as he gets really anxious and scared! He loves animals and we thought spending time with horses doing riding , grooming etc could be helpful. We are trying to find a place in North London/ Hertfordshire where we can take him. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thank you!

  • There is an exceptionally good riding school in Luton Called Baylands Equestrian Centre in Stockwood Park. All three of my children go regularly and they really benefit. I highly recommend this centre to anyone wanting to get their children involved with horses.

  • Thank you crystal12. I have emailed a local riding school for disabled kids. Hopefully they can help. Hotel California, thank you that is encouraging. Can I ask where you took your boys? X

  • My son's started out doing horse whispering.  No riding, just lots of grooming, hugging and learning the horse's body language and how your tone of voice affects the horse.

Best thing we ever did.  Both boys are now very confident around horses and have a lot of respect for the horse's.

  • Hi - is there a Riding For The Disabled premises in your area?  Whether they'd let him groom ponies/horses I don't know, but he could have riding lessons.  I've seen some children really enjoy riding/others not.  Everything's done at a gentle pace with trained volunteers and an instructor starting at a walking pace.
