Childhood toy

If you could own and play with one of your childhood toys you owned, which would it be?

I would get Barbie Magic of the Rainbow Elina Doll from 2006. I got this one Xmas from my mum and dad and it became my fave toy ever! I played with her every second I could and took her in to my school show and tell every time we had a show and tell….I treasured her. In the end my mum gave her away to a jumble sale because I was too “old” to play with dolls. I was so upset. I’m in my 20s now and still buy and play with dolls, but if I ever find Rainbow Elina again at a good price I’ll buy her in a heartbeat.

To say I was heartbroken when mine was given away is an understatement!

  • I had a tin money box in the shape of a dog kennel that I would love to get back. It was beautifully painted with a brown roof, cream brick walls and green grass sprouting up the sides. A shaggy dog looked out through the door. There was a lever which made her red tongue stick out so that you could put a coin on it. When you would press a mechanical switch, the tongue would shoot in and the coin would drop into the kennel.

There wasn’t ever more than a few pence in the tin, but I loved playing with it repetitively, hearing the ping and watching the tongue shoot in. The shape of the kennel, the dog’s red tongue, and the beautiful painted imagery are vivid in my mind. I think the money box was lost in a house move, but I often think about it and wish I could have back. I would sit with it every evening and feed it coins.

  • That sounds lovely and a bit like something I had when I was a child. Not exactly as you described....but I had a money tin that was a dog house and the dogs tongue was functional and swallowed the coins. I can remember shaking the tin and listening to the coins jingle from inside....fun memories for me.

    This was what I had

I'm not sure what happened to it. My mum isn't sure either, probably lost or chucked out.

  • Oh my goodness! I can hardly believe what I am seeing!  Your money tin looks so much like mine in many ways, the tongue looks identical.

The extraordinary thing is that for the last few weeks I have been thinking a lot about my tin, wishing that I could have it back.

Thank you for posting this - you have made my day.

You are welcome, I'm glad I could make your day a little brighter! :-)

I miss my tin too. We used to go on yearly holidays down to Seaton and I used to add coins all year long to my little dog tin, it was also a good sensory thing for me listening to the coins jingle jangle sometimes. I hope some day you can find another identical tin......I hope I can find my own tin again, I currently use an ordinary money tin which is a lot less fun.
