Star Wars: Darth Vader

Re-watching Star Wars IV, V and VI (the best films IMHO). I want to make the case for why Darth Vader is an excellent role model:

  • He's a strong leader and high achiever
  • He takes tough decisions and stands firm against dissenters
  • He's brave - first into danger and not afraid of a fight
  • He's willing to get his hands dirty
  • He is genuinely skilled and good at his job
  • He doesn't micro-manage
  • He has clear expectations and priorities
  • He's willing to consider innovative solutions
  • He has principles and doesn't let personal connections cloud his judgement
  • He recognises there are times when you need to bow to authority and times that you should challenge it
  • He is willing to change his mind when he realises he's wrong

Let's also not forget that he does all this with serious and very visible disabilities. Personally I think he's someone to look up to.

I mean, there are faults too, but I think the positives often get overlooked. Overall: I've had worse bosses.

(This isn't meant to be a serious post btw)

  • Don't forget his conflict resolution skills are unmatched...

And he brought his son to work one day. Mind you that didn't work out too well for his boss, but it did earn Vader a promotion to a Force ghost.

That promotion also gave him back his youthful good looks when Ben and Yoda were left as their aged bodies. The Force must love him.
