Burnout / overwhelm

I've been dealing with another acute burnout since around the beginning of October. It got very bad by mid December but having a few weeks leave has done me a lot of good. On the mend but not all the way there yet.

But something has now happened twice in the last month that has shaken my confidence and frightened me a bit.

Both times I went into the office, which was mostly okay but is always taxing. On the drive home I became disorientated. Yesterday I was stopped at some temporary traffic lights and when they changed it was almost like I couldn't process what I was seeing. I could see every cone, every part of the road, etc but I just couldn't make any sense of it or where to drive. I had to pull over on to the pavement and give myself a shake. Basically the same thing happened before Christmas.

Does this sound like overwhelm or burnout or have I developed a whole new problem?

  • Sorry to hear you've got this going on, hope you're ok.

This sounds like burnout to me, I seem to be in a similar cycle in terms of the time, usually towards the end of the year and into the new year. I personally think it's a combination of being a bit down over the darker nights, not being able to do outside hobbies as a result, along with it being a run up to Xmas which I enjoy but struggle with too due to all the change in normal routine and the social pressures.

Maybe the sunlight/vitamin D thing also plays a role at this time?

I also try and work through them, but it often makes it worse. I've had those weird moments on the way home, where I really feel zoned out. Calling in at a shop and finding I'm not in a fit state to walk round it happens sometimes too.

Try and take as much time for rest as you can, it's not just about sleeping either, try and find some distractions while you're awake, I often just watch daft documentaries that have nothing to do with our normal day to day, so I can't relate at all and it gives my mind a break (Bigfoot, unexplained, wildlife,  those sort of documentaries are good for that!)

I hope things improve for you soon. We need to form a strategy for o avoid going round this same loop again too, "seasonal burnout" could be a new term?!

  • Yes, it always seems to be the end of the year that burnout arrives.
