Autism & driving stress

Hi! I drive a lot for work and can’t change this, but I absolutely hate it. Driving causes me so much anxiety and sensory overload. I struggle to cope with traffic a lot. I’m self employed and I can’t make any changes to this as the driving part of my job is essential, but I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to cope a bit better? Any fidget toys that are good for having in the car, exercises to help calm down? Safe ways to help with the stress of it all? Thanks!

  • I took over a year to learn to drive as a 17 year old as I kept breaking down every lesson, just feeling overwhelmed. I like driving mostly now except in inner cities. Now age 43. If I get lost, which happens regularly, I just talk to myself out loud and go round and round a roundabout while I try to work out where I'm going. Or pull up and again talk out loud about it to myself. Are there particular things which stress you out or trigger your anxiety and sensory overload?
