Autism & driving stress

Hi! I drive a lot for work and can’t change this, but I absolutely hate it. Driving causes me so much anxiety and sensory overload. I struggle to cope with traffic a lot. I’m self employed and I can’t make any changes to this as the driving part of my job is essential, but I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to cope a bit better? Any fidget toys that are good for having in the car, exercises to help calm down? Safe ways to help with the stress of it all? Thanks!

  • Like others have said I too hate driving. I really love the idea of it and wanted to drive for ages, but couldn’t afford it. Finally saved up for lessons in my mid 30s and really hated it and felt like a total failure. Took 3 attempts to pass the test and then have barely driven since because every time I tried it felt like I’d forgotten everything and couldn’t do it. Too many other drivers on the road, all wanting to do everything fast and feels like there’s no time to think
