Autism & driving stress

Hi! I drive a lot for work and can’t change this, but I absolutely hate it. Driving causes me so much anxiety and sensory overload. I struggle to cope with traffic a lot. I’m self employed and I can’t make any changes to this as the driving part of my job is essential, but I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to cope a bit better? Any fidget toys that are good for having in the car, exercises to help calm down? Safe ways to help with the stress of it all? Thanks!

  • I had to give up driving for a while as I found it so stressful I was having really bad nightmares all night, every night, driving triggered my PTSD big time. I had some CBT and it helped a little, I didn't have a car by that time so any help it could have was limited. I do drive again now, but only on minor roads, I can cope with the A55 from Holyhead to Bangor, but I prefer quieter roads and I cannot drive on motorways, they cause an instant panic attack and melt down, not good in the middle lane of the M4.I don't even like being a passenger on a motorway.

Sorry there's noting I can say to help, but I do understand.
