Noise canceling headphones

I just tried on noise canceling headphones. The noise canceling option works it’s amazing and i can listen to music simultaneously if I want, but it gave me some sort of unpleasant sensation like squeezing in my ears or head, it’s hard to describe it. So I decided to stay with my soft earplugs for few €. They make noises quieter but I still hear things. The only disadvantage of the earplugs is that they don’t fully cancel high pitched sounds like car brakes or tram squeak on the rails for example. Has anyone similar experience with noise canceling headphones? Do you get used to this sensation or is it only me feeling that?

  • Have Bose QCs too and they’re amazing. Instant anxiety relief Slight smile

  • I've now had them a couple of days, and they are amazing. When I first put them on, I do get that "underwater effect", but once they are actually turned on this goes away. They have active noise cancelling, and via the app you can customise the strength of this, and set presets for what you are doing. On its lowest, you can still have conversations and it only makes a small difference, on its highest I can have the heating on on full blast whilst in the car and I won't hear it whatsoever (I also won't hear the car's engine or almost anything else), so it makes a huge difference. The sound quality is also pretty great.

There are various different QuietComfort headphones, mine are the BOSE QuietComfort SC.

  • I have just got the Anker Q20i and for the money they are good and cut out most of the sound and are very extremely comfortable to wear too.  There's a difference in the audio sound if you switch from "normal" to "noise cancelling"(NC) .  These are the first pair of NC headphones I've had and understand the comment made of feeling under-water when NC is switched on  - for me that's OK compared to hearing noise.  The NC is fairly good when music is off.

  • I've just ordered some Bose QuietComfort headphones, and they should arrive on Tuesday. If I remember, I'll drop an update about my experience with them after I've used them for a couple of days.

  • I'd be lost without mine. I know what you mean about the odd sensation but I found I that I did get used to it with persistence use. I don't even notice it now. I have the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones. Pricey but definitely the best noise-canceling headphones I've used.

  • I listen to only instrumental music and yes it blocks out noise to some extent. But on a busy street it’s not working, it’s only more and more noise and the music it’s not recognisable and it only makes me stressed and other bad reactions. So if it’s relatively silent, I listen to music, but if it’s loud then I only cover my ears. I would be afraid to walk in the street with noise fully canceled, but with earplugs is ok. I still hear but it’s not that painful. They somehow work for me best and I even got used to feeling them inside my ears.

  • I perhaps need to try some Bose ones, that feeling sounds like it's worth paying a little extra for!

  • I found there was a sensation almost like being underwater, a muted type of pressure.

I tried different headphones and some of them had this effect and some didn’t. I have Bose QuietComfort headphones and they don’t don this.

  • It shocked me that when I turned the world down, something I wished I could always do, it felt so weird I wanted the noise back.

It was very different for me. The moment I turned them on I felt an enormous pressure lifted from and the anxiety drained out of me. An amazing and immediate relief.

  • It shocked me that when I turned the world down, something I wished I could always do, it felt so weird I wanted the noise back.

I think it actually made me realise that it's how I'm meant to be, so I should accept it more.

On the flip side I still need to shut the noise out (people, my thoughts, ambient noise) to some extent. I tried plugs but they fall/pop out and have a similar effect to the over ear headphones. Also tried ear buds but they're the same, it's like having a finger forced into your ear. so far I  find that the headphones that just sit in your ear work ok, but obviously need to have some music on to block out other sounds, which can be problematic as the lyrics, specific song etc. Distract me.

I've heard grey noise is good for that,  or music that's purely instrumental.

Anything sounds better than my tinnitus though!

  • Yes, I think you described that perfectly! That’s why I decided to not purchase these headphones. Just tried them on.

  • I found there was a sensation almost like being underwater, a muted type of pressure.

Also found that they made me slightly on edge, having a sense that's usually annoyingly over active "turned down" wasn't the relief I expected! I felt a bit paranoid at what I was missing.

  • It’s very difficult to find a good quality pair of over-ear Bluetooth noise cancelling headphones that won’t break within 6 months (poor build quality) and are not insanely expensive - an important feature is multipoint that allows you to have them connected to your phone and your iPad at the same time - aside from travelling, the noise in the local area from screaming children, fireworks,  people shouting in the street late at night and barking dogs is nearly unbearable at times, as is traffic stopped at a local junction with blaring music at full volume, even in the early hours - the woke leftist council in this area would rather take legal action against people making the complaint about noise issues “for making a malicious complaint” rather than properly sorting the problem

  • Hi! I stopped wearing overears (which are the only headphones  that really cut out the noise) because my ears got uncomfortably warm and I’d get a headache from wearing them, but then I got to try the Bose QuietComfort. They kind of worked for me. But I don’t know if that’s an option for you personally.

  • Thank you, the ones I tried were for music but also with the option for noise cancellation. I have headphones for music and I use them when I want to listen to music. I will See if I can get these under the link, thank you for sharing.
