no, stop, etc..

Hi my child struggles to cope with words like no and stop whenever they are said around him (even if not directed at him) he has a major meltdown as you can imagine this makes everyday convo very hard for example my autie boy may be watching his fave tv show and a typical convo "oh do you want pasta for tea?"  My partner wilk reply "no not tonight" and this causes a meltdown!?  Help!? Does anyone else experience this we are currently saying n..o.. and spelling out the words but when you forget its a nightmare thanks

  • Hi - my adult son has certain words that trigger negative reactions so we don't use those words.  It's worth remembering that even if a conversation isn't directed at your son that he may not realise that.  He hears the word, which upsets him + reacts as you would expect.  For yrs now I've used other words that convey the same meaning, whether talking to him or to others.  Instead of "no", I say things like "I don't think so".  Alter your phraseology!Smile
