Poem

I recently watched a terrible YouTube video about autism by someone who called himself a professional. So I wrote the poem below:

Understand This

I would rather talk to a dog

or disclose to a frog

or confide in a chicken

or divulge to a budgie

or relate to a snake

or reveal to an eel

or tell a gerbil how I really feel

than seek understanding

from someone

who believes

that autistic people

are less human than they are.

    The Grump

As a grump I walked this empty street
And found my sullen eyes to meet
A sky I thought seemed far too blue
And such a whumpus grump was I
To scowl upon this too blue sky
And ask “What right have ye to be this hue?”

“I’ve known these skies in shades of grey.
They drizzled and rained the other day.
As I know these skies are wont to do.
Long I walked this soil and muck,
And never did I know such luck.
Tae see a sky that looks like you.”

As a grump I skipped through thickened fields
Of flowers bearing their vibrant yields
In colours the likes I never knew
And such a frumpus grump I’d been
To glare upon these fields of green
And say “What is a grump to do?”

“These bushy fields once full of weeds,
That snagged upon my boots and tweeds,
Are taken o’er by this pretty view.
Perhaps the sun so brightly shone
In this sky so clearly shown
I might suspect a thing or two.”

As a grump I danced o’er mossy logs
And found a pack of playing dogs
Running and tousling the way dogs do
And such a humphus grump I say
Could hardly help but stop and stay
And say “I think I’d like to play too!”

“What a whumpus fool I’ve been!
The frumpiest fool you’ve ever seen!
Why, I bet you’d think so too!
I think I may yet ponder why
This humphus, lumpus, sort of guy
Might look upon this world anew!”

“Why, I think I blame you.”

“It’s you who made the skies so blue
Who made them seem a vibrant hue.
It’s you who took these clouds of grey
And bid them rain another day
The way that only you could do.

“You showed me colours I never knew
You’ve shown me such a pretty view
Who took these weedy, thickened fields
And gave them such appealing yields
I did suspect a thing or two.

“It’s you who led me to those logs
    To those tousling, playing dogs
Who bid this whumpus grump to stay
To join the fun, to stop and play
And make me see the world anew

“And with such a toothy grin
You, the one that lured me in
I dare say I think you knew
You knew that if our roles reversed
If I’d shown you this new world first
    Well, you’d blame me too.”
