How to deal with a SORN and getting a used car?

I need help, guys.

My friends say that a new turbo for a car is an expensive job. Having already salted up for a service, I can ill afford to spend recklessly.

Considering a used car, replacing mine, and writing the car I have off. How many I go about getting a reliable car; which is cheaper to insure?

It cost me £800 for a new turbo on my 2005 VW Gold 2.0 TDi about 10 years ago and I doubt the prices hace gone down.

Why do you think it needs replacing by the way? You mentioned the sound it was making after the service so I would get that looked into first as it tends to be somethine simple to fix.

To see if your turbo is worn, drive along at about 5,000 RPM, check there is nobody behind you then lift off the accelerator for a few seconds then press the accelerator hard and see if you get a cloud of blue smoke out the exhaust. This is the tell take sign. Not black smoke but blue.

Just make sure you have a safe place to do this as your attention will be off the road in front.
