Dla -higher rare mobility

Hi

I am after some advice.

my son aged 12 has aspergers, dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia.  We were in the process of applying for a statement but in the meantime he couldn't cope with mainstream school so emergency action has  been taken and the council have granted permission for him to attend a special school.

the advice I'm after is relating to dla mobility. He is in receipt of high rate care and low rare mobility at the mo. i really feel he should qualify for  high rate mobility. The school he is going to attend is 6 miles away - he will not use the provided transport as he won't travel with other children. This would make him ill and I won't put him through this. The harsh reality is I've had to reduce my hours and i now work part year as no one else can care for him when I'm at work so I am unable to afford a car and I feel that we have had to fight for everything so far - appointments, diagnosis,  statement, dla etc.....

I couldn't face another fight and just wanted some advice from people who can empathise and KNOW what it's like - have I a chance with high rate mobilty or should I just forget it.

  • The very best advice I can give you is to contact your local Parent Partnership as they are used to helping parents complete DLA forms and appeals and they can also advise how to word things.

  • Hi - I don't think you shd forget about it, but I'd check things out if I were you before applying.  See what's on this site or sites for people with disabilities.   CAB are gd at helping with form filling.   Remember the dwp will reassess your son's entitlement to mobility allowance, not just whether he shd get the higher rate.
