Creative outlets and socialising

I've been thinking recently of creative outlets and how they can help with socialising, at least with meeting people you want to have meaningful interactions with, not just people you pass in the street. I listened to something recently which was talking about finding people who share your interests, not trying to match the more typical interests of neurotypical people because it won't work as well - you simply won't enjoy the experience as much. Sounds very obvious when said, but of course I've been trying to fit a mold all my life and struggled with friendships for as long as I can remember.

For example, I have a friend who does his own podcast about local indie music bands. The way he talks about it and actually wants to devote time to that pursuit, just as a hobby, shows he has a genuine enjoyment and fulfillment from it. I could never do a podcast, but I do find this very inspiring - I may find socialising hard, but I still want to have meaningful conversations with people about what I enjoy.

Whilst I'm thinking where to take this next, I'm wondering what other people may do to feel more creative or fulfilled?

  • While looking for inspiration along a similar path; I borrowed the below book from our local library (it is aimed at Autistic young people - however, I saw some book reviews where Autistic adults said they got ideas and insight from reading the book with themselves in mind too):

"The autistic guide to adventure : active pursuits from archery to wild swimming for tweens and teens"

  • I make cards for friends and family. Only personal use. Also I like to paint wooden crafts and pebbles.

  • I garden, I used to do hairdressing before ill health put a stop to it, hair was the only medium where I could get what was in my head out into the world. I cook a lot too, but I rarely have anyone to cook for and although I know I could probably have a decent go at Masterchef, I've lost the confidence and round here theres so few places to get ingredients from, I've never heard of half the stuff they use. I supposed I rarely feel fulfilled although I have masses of creativity, I just can't get it out.
