Quick question

Hey, hope everyone’s okay I’ve not been here for a while but I had a question where I couldn’t find a trusted answer so wanted to post it and get a few people’s thoughts.

Since getting my diagnosis about 6 months ago at the age of 32 I’ve been on a bit of a rollercoaster and eventually really came to terms with it all about 6 weeks ago. Since then I’m curious to discover what things, traits and behaviours that I have are linked with being autistic. I find it fascinating because there are just so many things I discover and so many different perspectives to imagine from that point.

Anyway, back to the question at hand. Does anyone else have their TV very loud?

I know that it’s a well known thing that we don’t process sounds in a neurotypical way and therefore can be easily frustrated etc by loud/ repetitive noises. However, I have my TV very loud and always have/ or would put subtitles on when it was at say the volume my neurotypical sister would have hers.

To my knowledge my hearing is fine. I’m thinking is this because I struggle to separate say the sound of my fridge and other household noises when I want to concentrate so I instead to drown them out?

Or could this be a comfort thing? As if I was in anyone else’s home and they had their TV anywhere near the volume I have mine when I’m at home. I’d probably have to leave.

Anyway, would be interesting to hear some thoughts from likeminded people Blush

(sorry if any terminology etc isn’t correct still new to all of this lol)

  • I have my TV on really quiet and if what I'm watching features loud screams and shouting then I'll mute the sound until it finishes. I have my TV on all day when I'm not at school, keep it on quiet so it's just background noise keeping me calm. It's nice hearing voices from the TV as well, almost feels like I'm sat with friends, in a way. I think it could definitely be a comfort thing for you, it is for me.
