Last weekend, I accompanied my adult son on a visit to my mother's, as she required his help in sorting out some technical issues with her TV, laptop, and mobile phone. Now, my 68-year-old mother would be the first to admit that she doesn't have a clue about how technology works.
My mother has a TV package with one of the big telecommunication companies. On her TV, one can create profiles... Put simply, it's a TV guide consisting of one's favourite TV channels. My mother could not understand why the main 'shared' profile listed all the channels available, whilst the one she had created only consisted of four. Perhaps I shouldn't have laughed, but I found it hard not to as I explained how the profile function worked.
Later, when my son was sorting out my mother's laptop issues, she asked if it was safe to turn off her TV, or if it would affect her laptop and mobile phone. My son and I struggled to keep our faces straight. I'm sure my mother thinks that because she is with the same company for her TV package, broadband connection, mobile phone, and landline phone, dealing with an issue on one device will automatically affect the others.
The best laugh was when my mother mentioned in a message a day or so later that one of her siblings had been receiving a spate of scam phone calls. Okay, that bit wasn't funny, but my mother's theory. The theory was that because a government Cabinet member had visited our region the previous day, this was somehow responsible for the scam calls my aunt had received.
Sometimes, I think I ought to start keeping a record of some of the things my mother comes out with. If my son ever settles down and has children, I can then tell them all about the weird and wonderful theories their great-grandmother had.
