Seeing detail rather than the main subject

I often find myself looking at minor details and miss the main thing. So for example I am listening to a talk and I start noticing how the patterns are on the lectern or something on the wall. The most frustrating thing is when I wait to see the weather forecast and I spend so long noticing what the presenter is wearing, patterns etc. I miss half of the forecast.

Does anyone else do things like this?

Parents
  • Yes.  I attended my first live concert pianist performance as a teenager and I couldn’t hear the music while also looking at the musician.  I had to look away to hear it.  To this day I don’t understand orchestral concerts of live events because what I see seems to bear no resemblance to what I hear. The beauty and power of music conflicts with the imagery of folks playing instruments.  It’s just occurred to me that I have such difficulties understanding ‘theory of mind’ that maybe the priority is ‘what are they thinking now?’ Instead of focusing on the point of what they are doing.
