Seeing detail rather than the main subject

I often find myself looking at minor details and miss the main thing. So for example I am listening to a talk and I start noticing how the patterns are on the lectern or something on the wall. The most frustrating thing is when I wait to see the weather forecast and I spend so long noticing what the presenter is wearing, patterns etc. I miss half of the forecast.

Does anyone else do things like this?

  • I can be like this too, particularly when watching the news or weather forecast. Quite often I can find myself so focused on what the presenter is wearing (if I like the outfit), that I switch off to what they are saying. It's a similar thing If I'm watching the news and the screen behind the presenter is showing 'live' footage of the view outside the TV studios. If I notice any kind of movement, such as a moving train, emergency vehicles with flashing lights, smoke billowing out of chimneys, etc, I completely switch off to what is being said, as I'm too focused on what's going on in the background.

The same is true if the backdrop behind the presenter is a view of other areas of the TV studio. All it takes is for me to spot someone in the background walking up a flight of stairs, and it's as though I become fixated on what that person is doing, rather than on what the news presenter is saying.

At times, it can make for some interesting conversations between my son and me. Laughing
