One of those days

Today has proven to be one of those days when not everything goes quite to plan.

This morning I had an appointment with my registered dental practice. I seldom venture further than my local shop without my (adult) son accompanying me, but as my appointment clashed with an appointment he needed to attend, I was forced to step out of my comfort zone and attend my dental appointment alone. Rescheduling my appointment wasn't an option on account of being in pain, having a foul taste in my mouth, and suspecting I had a post-extraction dental infection.

It was confirmed that I do indeed have an infection, albeit a "small" one, so I was handed a prescription for a 5-day course of Amoxicillin. After the dental surgeon had taken a good look inside my mouth, I was pleasantly surprised when he informed me that apart from a scale and polish, no further work needs to be done. As it had been a good 10 years since I had last regularly visited a dental practice, I had been bracing myself to be told that I would require at least one or two fillings.

After leaving the dental practice, which is on the other side of my local town, there were a few bits of shopping I wanted to get from a Tesco Extra in my town. I then made my way to my town's branch of Boots to get my antibiotics. Unfortunately, just as I handed over the prescription, the pharmacy's computer system went down. Without the computer system being up and running, the pharmacist couldn't issue me with my antibiotics. Furthermore, the issue was nationwide. Oh, F*ckity Bo**ocks! My intention had been to get started on the antibiotics as soon as I got outside the store, but obviously, I had to abandon that plan.

Upon arrival at the bus station to get the bus home, I discovered I'd missed the bus by all of about 3 minutes. The next one wasn't due for another 17 minutes, but as I didn't have the patience to wait, I decided to get a taxi home. Fortunately, there is a taxi rank situated a short walk from my town's bus station. The taxi fare wasn't too bad (£5), and at least it meant I got dropped off outside my house, as opposed to walking back from the local bus stop with two somewhat heavy bags of shopping.

Having left my house shortly before 10am this morning, it was nearing 12:30pm when I returned. As I knew I didn't have the physical energy to venture back out again, my son said he would visit an independent pharmacy to get my antibiotics. However, as time was ticking on, I knew he would be hard-pushed to get there before they closed at 1pm for lunch. Thankfully, I do now have my antibiotics, and having taken the first one, I'm hoping it won't take too long for it to start taking effect (i.e. within the next hour or so).

  • Thank you, .

Compared to the infection I had a few weeks ago, the pain is thankfully nowhere near as excruciating.

According to the dentist I saw on Wednesday, it had been clear from the X-rays that my double extraction would be complicated, due to the root of my lower-left 2nd molar apparently being curved. I guess that explains why I felt as though the dental surgeon was wrestling to get my teeth extracted.
