Tuning in / tuned out.

Most of my life when listening to music I've tended to take in the music but not the words. Years ago a professional singer I knew asked me my opinion of her latest song. I said I liked the sound of it. When she asked me about the lyrics I said honestly 'I've no idea' and she was unimpressed with that. Has anyone else experienced similar with music and/or other things? I'm watching some 1980s music videos, some of which I liked at the time. I'm able to take in (without trying too hard) the lyrics too now which is refreshing and like a new experience of the same thing, funnily enough Slight smile

  • I'm another one that tends to focus more on the music than the lyrics. I'm hopeless at remembering lyrics unless they're the lyrics to a well-known song. Even then, I might only remember the chorus.

As I've aged, I have noticed that I mishear lyrics, as there seems to be a tendency for some vocalists to mumble, or else sing the lyrics far too quickly. Sometimes this can cause me much amusement, especially when I discover years later that what I thought I'd heard (lyrics-wise) was completely wrong.

Quite often, if I want to know the lyrics to a song, I'll end up searching for them on the internet. Having said that, they aren't always completely accurate.

  • For decades I thought the lyrics in The Pretenders' 'Brass in pocket' were "Got moose cack,so reet", when it was "Got new skank, so reet".

  • I've got a lot of lyrics muddled up over the years. I thought the Queen song 'One Vision' ended with him saying 'white chicken' but I see now he does actually say 'fried chicken' (not one vision) Upside down
